WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Aquaman, in theaters now.

Aquaman's trailers clearly indicated Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry would need to retrieve a special trident belonging to his ancestor, King Atlan, to stop his war-hungry brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) from attacking the surface world.

As the movie rolls on, we discover the different tridents Arthur encounters aren't just arbitrary weapons. Each belongs to the Royal Elite of Atlantis, and actually serve a very deep purpose. Here's a look at the story behind each of them.

Arthur's Justice League Trident

Aquaman

In Zack Snyder's Justice League, after Steppenwolf took Atlantis' Mother Box, Arthur knew he had to join the League to stop the villain. With Mera's help, he armored up and also took a five-pronged trident with him. Aquaman now reveals this trident -- which takes influence from Neptune's Trident in the comics -- belonged to his mother, Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman). It was the weapon she kept on land when she had Arthur with Tom Curry, anticipating the day the Atlanteans would come for her.

When she returned to the sea kingdom, her trusted advisor Vulko (Willem Dafoe) would journey topside to train Arthur and teach him about his heritage. The weapon he brought for the boy's sessions was Atlanna's trident, which could manipulate the flow of water and enhance his abilities to communicate with the ocean's lifeforms.

When Vulko revealed that his mother was thrown into the Trench after her husband, King Orvax, found out about her son on the surface, a heartbroken Arthur wanted nothing more to do with the weapon and sent it back with Vulko, which is why he had to retrieve it in Justice League. But as Vulko would tell Arthur, he'd need something more powerful than this to take Orm on.

The Trident of the Dead King

When King Atlan first had his vision to make Atlantis the greatest city on the planet, he was blessed with a trident forged from the metal of the sea god, Poseidon. It was imbued with Poseidon's magic, allowing Atlan to harness unparalleled amounts of energy so as to make Atlantis, which existed on the surface in its early days, a technologically-advanced wonder of the world.

Sadly, while using this trident as an energy key for a risky experiment, Atlan destroyed Atlantis' foundation, sinking it into the ocean. However, with the secrets to its energy unlocked, Atlantis would recover and become a majestic underwater kingdom. But that still couldn't stop Atlan from becoming a recluse, ashamed of his ambition. He retired to the core of the Earth, where he lived out his last days, becoming known as the Dead King.

He died with his trident in hand, protected by the kaiju-like Karathen, who ensured that only a worthy successor could hold the weapon. This turned out to be Arthur, who wanted it for peace, not war. With this indestructible trident in hand, he could now control every single creature and manipulate energy across the entire ocean bed.

Orm's Regal Trident

In his fights with Arthur, Orm wields the three-pronged trident that belonged to his father, King Orvax. While it's similar in design and coloration to Atlanna's trident, it's stronger than the Queen's, because Orvax poisoned it with all his hate and rage. This is why, when Orm wields it, all he can think of is war and revenge, and this extra aggression results in him breaking Atlanna's trident in his first battle with Arthur.

This is the trident that belongs to the King of Atlantis, fashioned in the wake of Atlan's disappearance eons ago. As for its powers, it too is relatively indestructible (well, that is until its unique Atlantean metal meets that of Poseidon's) and commands every single soldier and creature that has vowed to defend Atlantis.

It doesn't boast any mystical traits, and just like Atlanna's, it's simply for use in battle and to remind all the people of Atlantis they must bow to the person holding it. Of course, it's merely a substitute because the real trident of the king is the one Atlan hid away in his tomb, which Arthur eventually uses to claim his throne.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, Dolph Lundgren as Nereus and Nicole Kidman as Queen Atlanna. The film is in theaters now.
