According to the Gold Coast Bulletin, pre-production on the Warner Bros. film will get under way later this month at Village Roadshow Studios. However, first the sets have to be dismantled for Marvel's "Ragnarok." Cameras are expected to roll after the first of the year.

Directed by James Wan ("The Conjuring," "Furious 7"), "Aquaman" stars Jason Momoa as the DC Comics superhero, a role he originated in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and reprises next year in "Justice League." He'll be joined by Amber Heard and Mera and Willem Dafoe as Vulko.

Written by Will Beall ("Gangster Squad") from a story treatment by Wan and DC Entertainment CEO Geoff Johns, the film was recently described by the director as "a classic sort of swashbuckling action adventure, sort of high seas adventure story."

“It’s ultimately a quest story in the spirit of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ meets ‘Romancing the Stone,'" he said.

Wan's comments have already led to speculation that the film's plot will involve the search for the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful mystical weapon in the DC Universe that can control and conjure water, and create water elements, fog and intense storms, and fire bolts of energy.

"Aquaman" opens July 27, 2018.
