As the DC Extended Universe turns away from the divisive Justice League and toward December's Aquaman, Warner Bros. has unveiled a first glimpse of Jason Momoa's new costume.
Introduced in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Momoa returned for an expanded role as Arthur Curry in Justice League. While Aquaman provided many of the laughs in the superhero ensemble, his latest costume shows the future king of Atlantis means business in his own adventure.
Appearing on a poster at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Jason Momoa's Aquaman stands in stark contrast to the image of Shazam! star Zachary Levi in costume.
Director James Wan has promised he will deliver a modern take on the DC hero and his complicated family backstory, but a little of the classic Aquaman can still be seen in his vision. While not quite the vibrant green and orange that the character is known for on the pages of DC comics, the costume appears as a toned-down version of theose colors in fitting with the DCEU's darker aesthetic.
Note that Curry is still carrying the quindent that he took from Amber Heard's Mera in Justice League, meaning Aquaman still hasn't claimed his signature Trident of Neptune, and isn't king (yet). While fans still wait patiently wait for Wan's promised Aquaman trailer, there is a little longer to wait before audiences get a full look at Momoa in Atlantis action.
Arriving in theaters on Dec. 21, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temeura Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Ludi Lin, Michael Beach, Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe.
