HBO Max has released the first four minutes of Aquaman: King of Atlantis.

The clip takes viewers to the mythical undersea kingdom where the new royal court of Atlantis is presented to the people -- despite them being unimpressed by Aquaman (Cooper Andrews) as a leader. No sooner does he take the awkwardly-designed throne than his royal advisor Vulko (Thomas Lennon) present him with a long list of bureaucratic tasks to complete, much to the disagreement of his partner, Princess Mera (Gillian Jacobs). The argument is interrupted by the sudden arrival of Ocean Master (Dana Snyder), Aquaman's half-brother, who challenges the king to a duel for the throne. Aquaman defeats him easily and comes to the conclusion that maybe an absolute monarch shouldn't be decided by ritual combat.

King of Atlantis is executive produced by James Wan, director of 2018's Aquaman and its upcoming sequel. The animated miniseries is intended to be a more light-hearte, comedic take on the character, focusing on his struggle to adjust to being a king. "This DC property is a fan-favorite rich with well-known characters and dynamic storylines," said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Original Content for HBO, of Aquaman: King of Atlantis when it was first announced. "On the heels of Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office smash hit, we are certain Aquaman: King of Atlantis will be an exciting addition to our already robust slate of kids and family programming.”

CBR's own Brandon Zachary gave a positive review of King of Atlantis. "Like the DC Extended Universe's Aquaman film, there's an acknowledgment of the wild elements around them and a full-throated embrace of them," the review reads. "It's enthusiastic and bright in a way that few superhero adaptations are. With the mini-series releasing over three weeks, Aquaman: King of Atlantis signifies a possible future for DC animation -- tight productions from unique styles, reinventing classic concepts and characters in new ways. It's well-worth diving into and a fun precursor of what could come next from the company."

Wan's Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom recently added three new cast members: Indya Moore, Jani Zhao and Vincent Regan, with Randall Park reprising his role as Dr. Stephen Shin from the first film.

The first episode of the series, titled "Dead Sea," will stream on Oct. 14 on HBO Max.
