Everyone is talking about Jason Momoa's Arthury Curry, but his Aquaman co-star Amber Heard's portrayal of Mera deserves just as much attention. Traditionally, Hollywood films have a tendency to ignore female supporting characters in order to focus on the male lead. Aquaman doesn't do that at all, however, much to Heard's relief.

Talking with the media at a press junket for the film, Heard took a moment to explain what she was most proud of in her portrayal of Mera. "I felt really lucky to have worked with filmmakers and people who wanted to maintain the integrity" of the original character, she explained.

Everyone seemed to be onboard with keeping the character close to her roots, and in maintaining "all those aspects of strength and integrity and individuality and agency" instead of "comprising them for palatability and sexuality," which is so common in massive movie productions.

Heard went on to talk about how Mera does not take a backseat to Aquaman in this movie, promisgin fans they will see her as "a superhero in her own right. She is no damsel in distress." In a final statement to the assembled media, she declared, "Mera's a kickass, badass woman and doesn't need any help from anyone, and I feel lucky that I get to play her."
