One of Aquaman's greatest enemies, Black Manta, is finally getting his own solo series for the first time ever.

Since the character's debut in Aquaman #35 back in 1967, Black Manta has always appeared in either Aquaman or various other titles. However, this fall fans will see the villain get his own six-part limited series written by Chuck Brown with art by Valentine De Landro, starting with Black Manta #1 on September 7, 2021. Aquaman himself does not even currently have a series, the character only appearing in Justice League by Brian Michael Bendis.

  • Following his appearance in the Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular, the scourge of the seas now gets his own series. Black Manta is chasing a rare metal with incredible powers, and he’s not the only one who wants to get his hands on it, friend and foe alike! Torrid is a former ally who has escaped hell (literally!) to answer the call of the metal, but can Manta trust her? Hopefully so because he might need her help to fend off Devil Ray, a new competitor for the role of the biggest villain underwater.
  • Both Aquaman: The Becoming #1 and Black Manta #1 feature a connecting variant cover by superstar artist Francis Manapul!
  • INTRODUCING NEW HERO TORRID AND VILLAIN DEVIL RAY!

So far, this book is one of three Aquaman-related projects set to release in the coming months. DC recently announced Aquaman: The Becoming, which will be a limited series focusing on LGBTQ+ hero Jackson Hyde. A connecting cover between the first issues of this series and Black Manta will be drawn by Francis Manapul.

The third upcoming project is the Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular issue, which will release in August. The one-shot will bring back popular Aquaman creators such as Geoff Johns, Paul Pelletier, Dan Jurgens, Steve Epting and others. Black Manta's appearance in this issue will kickstart his solo series the following month, where he will be going after "a rare metal with incredible powers".

The "scourge of the seas" will not be alone either, as the series will be introducing both a new hero and villain. Readers will meet Torrid, a former ally of Manta's that has literally escaped from Hell. Together, the two will work to retrieve the metal before Manta's new competition, Devil Ray, makes a claim "for the role of the biggest villain underwater".
