Arthur Curry and Mera previously had an infant son named Arthur, Jr., who was murdered by Black Manta years ago. The resulting grief put a strain on the couple's marriage, leading to its dissolution and Mera becoming inactive for a time. With Aquaman's role in Atlantis and the DC Universe shaky given recent events, the new child could put unwanted attention on the couple when they need it the least.
