Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the upcoming sequel to director James Wan's 2018 DC Extended Universe film Aquaman, has officially wrapped production.
On Dec. 9, 2021, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Momoa announced that he had wrapped filming in Hawaii. However, today, Jan. 12, Wan took to Instagram to celebrate the actual last day of production in California, sharing a photo of himself alongside Momoa and co-star Patrick Wilson (the latter of whom is dousing the group with a shower head). "And finally, finally, finally picture wrap on the actual last day of [Aquaman 2] in Malibu with these two gents," Wan wrote. "Yes, we do get very wet, a lot, on this show."
The director continued, "A thousand thank yous to all the incredible crew who worked so hard and tirelessly on this picture. Especially the U.K. portion where we shot 95 percent of the film. Truly some of the finest artisans and craftspeople I've had the good fortune to work with. And big shouts to the amazing Hawaiian and Los Angeles units." According to Wan, he still has "very long way to go" before Lost Kingdom is actually ready for release, but be "can't wait to share this little film with you all."
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sees Momoa and Wilson reprise their roles as rival half-brothers Arthur Curry/Aquaman and Orm Marius/Ocean Master, respectively, from the first film. Additionally, Aquaman stars Amber Heard, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Kidman and Randall Park reprise their roles as Mera, King Nereus, David Kane/Black Manta, Thomas Curry, Atlanna and Dr. Stephen Shin, respectively.
Lost Kingdom also features a number of newcomers, including Vincent Regan (300, Troy) as Atlan, as well as Jani Zhao (South) as Stingray and Indya Moore (Escape Room: Tournament of Champions) as Karshon. Additionally, Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) has been cast in an undisclosed role.
The film, which features a story co-written by Momoa and sees Wan return to the director's chair, is currently slated to hit theaters in December 2022. An official synopsis for Lost Kingdom provided by Warner Bros. Pictures reads, "When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation."
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled for release on Dec. 16.
