A synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom teases the titular hero teaming up with either David Kane/Black Manta or Orm Marius/Ocean Master to take on a major DC Extended Universe threat.

The synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which was provided by Warner Bros., reads as follows: " When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation." While it's not made clear just who Aquaman might team up with, the fact both Patrick Wilson and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will return as Ocean Master and Black Manta, respectively, makes them the likely choices.

The original Aquaman released in 2018. The movie proved a huge success at the box office and earned over $1.1 billion against a budget of between $160 and $200 million. In terms of worldwide box office, Aquaman remains the top-grossing film in the DCEU. Still, Aquaman didn't perform particularly well with critics and only holds a 65 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

As a result of Aquaman's success, Warner Bros. began pursuing a sequel and a spinoff called The Trench, which was canceled earlier this year, after the movie's release. Filming on Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom began in June and officially wrapped in December. While specific plot details for the movie are still being kept under wraps, a number of photos from the production have teased updated looks for Aquaman, Ocean Master and Black Manta.

Created by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris, Aquaman first appeared in 1941's More Fun Comics #73. A hybrid Human/Atlantean, Aquaman possesses a number of standard superheroic powers, such as super strength. His signature ability allows him to communicate with aquatic life telepathically. In the DCEU, actor Jason Momoa has played Aquaman since making a cameo appearance as the character in 2016's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Before getting his own solo movie, Aquaman played major role in 2017's Justice League film.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is slated for release on Dec. 16, 2022. According to the above press release, the movie stars Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Adbdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Temuera Morrison, Indya Moore and Randall Park.
