Jason Momoa has debuted a new suit for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Momoa revealed the new suit on social media in a comparison with the old suit from 2018's Aquaman. The new outfit is quite the contrast to the comic-accurate threads he donned in the final act of the previous film in the DC Extended Universe. Ditching the orange and green, the suit seems to be taking a page out of the playbook of Superman from Zack Snyder's Justice League with a darker aesthetic.
The bombshell announcement came as a surprise to fans. This is the fourth main super suit that the protector of the oceans has borne in the DCEU. Justice League (2017) had Arthur Curry in a more green suit, his solo film giving him both a gladiator-style getup and the comic-accurate suit previously mentioned. The color scheme is more reminiscent of his greatest foe and arch-nemesis, Black Manta.
Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is anticipated to be the main villain of the upcoming film, and has previously been teased to "loom much larger" in the sequel. The character played a supporting role in Aquaman, which introduced his vendetta against Arthur for refusing to save his father (Michael Beach). He was last seen in the film's end credit scene rescued by Dr. Stephen Shin (Randall Park) after a defeat delivered by Arthur and Mera (Amber Heard).
The sequel is expected to explore the seventh and final kingdom of the deep that was mentioned in Aquaman. The film saw Arthur's half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) unite five of the kingdoms to earn the title of Ocean Master. The sixth kingdom was revealed to be the dwellers of the Trench, which was expected to see a spinoff directed by James Wan, only to be cancelled later on.
According to Momoa's post, the sequel film will see the new suit and "more action." The last film had an explosive standoff with Manta and a massive battle for the soul of Atlantis in the finale, along with two duels between Orm and Arthur for the mantle of king. Fans will have to wait and see the new suit and the promised action when the film releases.
Starring Momoa, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will also feature Abdul-Mateen II and Heard, with Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman and others expected to reprise their roles from the first film. The sequel is scheduled to release on Dec. 16, 2022.
