Aquaman star Dolph Lundgren, who played King Nereus in the first film, stated that filming for Aquaman 2 might begin in summer 2021.

"I may be doing Aquaman 2 this summer, shooting in London," Lundgren said during a virtual Wizard World panel on Sunday, as reported by Comicbook.com. "And that's coming out the following year in the theaters, they hope."

At that same panel, Lundgren spoke about how filming for the first Aquaman was a different and, at times, uncomfortable experience compared to other films he's worked on prior. "[Aquaman] was certainly a new experience. The only water I ever saw was in my bottle of Evian that I drank. There was no water on set. It was really very dry," Lundgren said. "So you hang in the harness all day -- five, six, seven, eight hours a day -- and you move your legs in a certain way, you talk, and you move around, and then your hair is added later in the computer. So it's very, very tedious, but it's a different experience. And it was fun to work with all the great actors -- there's [Willem] Dafoe, and Patrick Wilson, and of course, Jason Momoa."

There have not been many updates on the Warner Bros. and DC Films' Aquaman sequel since the release date was announced in 2019. Mamoa, who plays the titular hero, had stated that he played a major role on the film's creative team and had pitched a large part of the story.

Aquaman 2 will not only show the return of Lundgren as King Nereus but Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta and Patrick Wilson as Aquaman's half-brother Orm/Ocean Master. Director James Wan has also revealed he intends to include more elements from his horror movie background in the film, though specifics have not been disclosed. Along with that, much of the plot will draw from the Silver Age Aquaman comics, particularly those that feature Black Manta.

Directed by James Wan, Aquaman 2 stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022.
