Rampart has finally dropped for Apex Legends, and fans are in love with her already. The fast-talking weapon modder has added a splash of personality matched only by the likes of characters like Mirage, but there may be more to her than meets the eye.

There’s already a tongue in cheek sense of style to all the Apex characters, who seem to be loosely aware of the ridiculous situations they’re putting themselves in. However, Rampart may be the first Legend not just to break the fourth wall, but see right through it.

The evidence of this lies in Rampart’s pre-match line. Every character in Apex has a selection of quips for the character selection screen that they’ll say when they’re chosen, and each line is cycled through at random. Most are just quips or casual references, but this one line from Rampart seems to flat out imply she knows she’s in a video game.

Upon choosing Rampart, you may get the line, “If I get taken out, it better be with a Rampart!” Given a rampart is, by definition, a wall that can’t be used to take someone out in the sense Rampart is referring to, it implies she’s referring to her in-match designation. If Rampart is aware of this, she may be aware that she’s about to go into a battle royale with a host of other Ramparts.

This would set Rampart apart from the other players, as she appears to be able to see that she’s in a game. While other Apex Legends characters have had exaggerated and over the top personalities, Rampart is the only one to demonstrate an almost Deadpool-esque ability to see the world around her for what it really is. And if Rampart knows that she’s in a video game, that could drastically affect how she propels the narrative of Apex Legends.

Of course, Apex is a game known for its twisting lore, and this may be a hint at a lore explanation for how the Games work. Even though every Apex Legends match has 60 competitors, there are still only 13 playable characters. The Legends themselves become something akin to celebrity, as many are hailed as fan favorites in their bios. Perhaps Rampart is acknowledging that everyone knows there are duplicates of themselves in the game, which may be how a deathmatch franchise like the Apex Games keeps running, despite participants being killed multiple times over in a single match.

Rampart has already proven to be an exciting and intriguing Legend, but this wrinkle does add more to the story. Ultimately, it may just be a throwaway line, as Rampart does appear to play a more direct role in Apex Legends’ on-going narrative regarding Kuben Blisk and the mysterious Hammond Robotics. It’s still early days for Apex and Rampart, but time will tell if she can see the players, or if something more nefarious is afoot.
