“Scientists predicted what would happen, but it was too late,” says Margaret Qualley’s Sam Walden in the first trailer for Netflix’s IO, which tells the story of a near future where Earth’s atmosphere becomes too toxic for survival and most of humanity flees to repopulate and rebuild on the titular moon of Jupiter.

Sam appears to be one of the last remaining humans on the abandoned planet, doing her best to adapt and survive on the toxic world that was once humanity’s home, all while broadcasting a signal narrated by her father in hopes of finding other survivors.

Eventually, an air balloon brings Micah, a former teacher played by Anthony Mackie (best know for his role as Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) who is dismayed by the horrors witnessed during the “final exodus” of humanity, and wants to leave on the last available shuttle. As the day of the final launch grows closer, Sam must decide to follow her desire to rejoin humanity in the stars or continue to fight for Earth’s survival, alone.
