Marvel Cinematic Universe star Anthony Mackie delved into the possibility of him appearing as Sam Wilson/Captain America in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie.

During an interview with Variety, Mackie was asked if he would be appearing in Thunderbolts, to which he answered, "I have no idea. You know how it works. [Marvel Studios calls] you the week before and are like, 'We own your ass. Come get in the movie.'" Prior to this, Mackie seemingly confirmed that he wouldn't be involved with the film while revealing that he hopes Steve Rogers actor Chris Evans would return to the MCU. "You know, Chris [Evans] is my boy, we all love and enjoy Chris," Mackie stated "I'm highly upset that they've put Sebastian [Stan, aka Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier] in a movie with Wyatt [Russell, aka John Walker/U.S. Agent] and left me out. If Sebastian gets Wyatt, I should get Chris."

Thunderbolts' Misfit MCU Characters

Aside from Winter Soldier and U.S. Agent, both of whom were last seen in Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the rest of the roster in Thunderbolts will consist of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), as revealed at D23 Expo. Regarding her return to the role of Ghost as part of the team, John-Kamen noted, "Well, she doesn't like to be touched, so that's gonna be interesting. She's quite socially-- well, she's not social. She grew up in the vat, so she's never had human contact with anyone. It's gonna be interesting for Ghost to connect."

Stan himself also discussed being a part of the Thunderbolts, giving a reason as to why Bucky is a member. "Well, listen, you know, these are my kinds of people," Stan remarked. "They look like a good troubled bunch, and maybe I know a thing or two about that, and I’m just really glad to be back and, I guess, join a team of some sort." Tying into this, Marvel Studios President/Marvel CCO Kevin Feige called Bucky the team's "most stable" member.

As for Mackie, notwithstanding his potential role in Thunderbolts, he will star in the upcoming Captain America: New World Order. In addition to the film introducing the Israeli superhero Sabra and seeing Sam's Falcon and Winter Soldier ally Joaquin Torres replace Sam as the former hero, it will also see the return of The Incredible Hulk's Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/the Leader.

Thunderbolts arrives in theaters on July 26, 2024.
