The following contains spoilers for Shazam! Fury of the Gods, now playing in theaters.

The Daughters of Atlas are the central villains of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and they initially appear to be on equal footing as a group. But it isn't long before Kaylpso takes center stage, allowing her sisters to find more nuance in their connections to the mortal realm. Specifically, her younger sister Anthea ends the film firmly on the side of the heroes -- allowing her to survive the entire plot relatively in one piece.

Looking to the future, Rachel Zegler's Anthea is an interesting addition to the cinematic DC Universe, a potential wildcard whose current heroic affiliation could easily give way to all sorts of different storylines. Due to her power set and origins, she has plenty of means to appear as an ally to other heroes -- and could even be a bridge to the franchise's ancient past. There's also the possibility that, like her sisters, she eventually turns fully against humanity.

Anthea's Fate in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Explained

Introduced initially in Shazam! Fury of the Gods as a new student at Freddy Freeman's high school, Anthea is actually one of the Daughters of Atlas. A trio of powerful beings who have spent untold centuries trapped in their decaying realm after the Wizard stole the powers of the Gods and helped slay their father, the sisters are accidentally released as a result of Shazam's actions in the previous film. Although Hespera and Kalypso are more aggressive toward humans and their role in eliminating the gods, Anthea is more conflicted. She quickly develops a fondness for Freddy, and while consistent in their mission to recover the stolen magic that empowers the Shazam family, she protests Kalypso's desire for overt revenge against humanity.

When Kalypso goes completely against humanity and mortally wounds Hespera, she also strips Anthea of her powers -- forcing her to spend most of Shazam! Fury of the Gods' final battle as powerless as Freddy. But by the end of the film, she (as well as her home realm) is restored with the help of Wonder Woman, and she is given her abilities back. Instead of remaining in her restored realm, though, Anthea decides to get to know humanity better by remaining on Earth. Shazam! Fury of the Gods ends with her holding hands with Freddy while at a Shazam family dinner, indicating their relationship will continue as well. Assuming the Shazam family makes the jump as well, this means Anthea will be firmly planted in the DCU. The movie utilizes Wonder Woman and other elements of the universe, tying it deeper into the superhero universe than it had been before. As a result, Anthea is now officially on the board and could make for an interesting wildcard going forward.

How Anthea Could Play Into DC's Future

Rachel Zegler's Anthea holds out her hands offensively as they glow in Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Anthea's powers over reality make her a uniquely powerful figure in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, capable of holding her own against those whose powers could theoretically outstrip her. If she has anything resembling the strength and endurance of Hespera, then she can actually throw down easily with the likes of Shazam. Her experience with the mystical side of the universe makes her particularly privy to elements that other heroes might have no real way of contending with or understanding, making her a valuable fountain of information (especially with other magical heroes in the universe like Doctor Fate currently dead) for other heroes. Anthea's experiences also paint her as something of a reformed villain with no real known background -- potentially making her a target for others.

Anthea's unique situation means she could factor into future events very easily on several different fronts. She could be approached by the Justice Society as a magical expert, especially if the post-credits tease about Shazam joining the team comes to fruition. Her ancient age and connection to the Greek Pantheon could allow her to be a factor in the Amazonian-centric Paradise Lost and even help tie it to the present day. Amanda Waller could decide she's a threat or an asset, leading the Suicide Squad to get involved in her life. She could even be eventually swayed against humanity, similar to her sisters, positioning her as a potential villain in the future. Anthea's unique status at the end of Shazam! Fury of the Gods could set up plenty of future roles for the character, even beyond the Shazam family.

To meet Anthea, Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently in theaters.
