Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania screenwriter Jeff Loveness recently singled out Kang the Conqueror's "humanity" as the main difference between him and Thanos.

Loveness compared Kang to previous overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe antagonist Thanos in an interview with SFX Magazine. "To me, it's all about the humanity," he said. "Obviously Thanos is a great, iconic villain, but he's also a big purple CGI guy. He's an alien from outer space. The thing I really wanted to lean into is that Kang is a human being... Kang's also a very lonely character. We're going to be seeing a lot of him in a lot of different ways going forward, but I really wanted to introduce the humanity and even the vulnerability of this character before he gets to such apocalyptic, Avengers-scale heights."

For his part, Kang actor Jonathan Majors is keen to downplay comparisons between his character and Thanos. In a recent interview, Majors insisted that Kang and Thanos represent "completely different worlds." He also said that the time-traveling baddie's backstory and character arc are very distinct from Thanos' own, further highlighting their differences. At the same time, Majors acknowledged that Thanos is "an incredible villain" and praised Josh Brolin's portrayal of the character in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Majors isn't opposed to comparing Kang with other MCU heroes and villains, though. The star recently likened Kang to the supervillain equivalent of Iron Man, explaining that the character needed to serve as a "counter" to the MCU's stable of costumed do-gooders. "You can look at Robert Downey's Iron Man and say, 'Okay, if that's the superhero of superheroes, et cetera, and I want to be a supervillain of supervillains, how do I counteract that in the zeitgeist?' I mean, I could write a book on this at this point -- but I'll close there," Majors said.

These qualities will make Kang a formidable opponent for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's titular protagonists -- something Majors teased in a previous interview. Majors warned that Kang will come for the MCU residents' "way of life" in the upcoming sequel, which will result in a large-scale showdown rather than a "mano-a-mano" fight. The actor also reiterated Kang's unique attributes, saying the villain "adds tonal diversity, real conflict and real friction" to the Marvel Studios' shared universe.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania arrives in theaters on Feb. 17, 2023.
