"Mad Max: Fury Road," "Ant-Man," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" are among the 20 films in the running for best visual effects honors at the 88th Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the preliminary shortlist on Monday -- a rules change increased the number of contenders this year from 15 -- but the field will be narrowed to 10 later this month. The five finalists will be announced Jan. 14, alongside the other Oscar nominees.

The contenders are:

  • "The Martian"
  • "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation"
  • "The Revenant"
  • "Spectre"
  • "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"
  • "Terminator Genisys"
  • "Tomorrowland"
  • "The Walk"

The 88th Academy Awards will be presented Feb. 28 in a ceremony broadcast live on ABC.
