Marvel Studios has been pretty cagey about its post-Avengers 4 plans, but fans may get a glimpse of things to come during Ant-Man and the Wasp. According to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and director Peyton Reed, Ant-Man and the Wasp's Quantum Realm scenes lay some groundwork for future Marvel Cinematic Universe installments.
“Like the first movie there are clues in the Quantum Realm to other possibilities and things,” Feige told io9. “I’m talking frames [of film].”
“We have definitely laid some groundwork for some stuff down there... similar to what we did in the first movie,” Reed added. “[In the first movie,] it was not until really DVD or Blu-ray release when people started freeze-framing it like ‘Wait a second. There’s a reflection. Is that Wasp down there? Is it Janet?’”
Here, Reed is referring to the scene where Scott Lang goes subatomic in 2015's Ant-Man. As he tumbles through the Quantum Realm, the silhouette of Janet van Dyne can be seen in the collection of lights seen by Lang and reflected off his helmet. Feige recently confirmed that theory to be true, and -- per his statement above -- it looks like the sequel film will contain even more Easter eggs.
Notably, Wasp actor Evangline Lilly had this to say about the Quantum Realm last year: “In Ant-Man and the Wasp, they are trying everything in their power to safely enter the Quantum Realm and return back from it because they have evidence from the first film that Scott Lang was able to do that. If he can do it, why can’t we? If we do succeed in Ant-Man and the Wasp, then that does open a whole entire new multiverse to enter into and play around in.” In other words, fans should definitely keep an eye out when the Quantum Realm is on screen.
In theaters this Friday, Ant-Man and the Wasp stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Judy Greer, David Dastmalchian, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Hannah John-Kamen, Randall Park and Walton Goggins.
