For a Marvel Studios movie, this weekend's "Ant-Man" was always set to be a smaller affair. The quirky hero and his sarcasm-laden premise has tampered box office expectations some for a film from the usually record-breaking studio.

But with the first night of box office receipts in, Peyton Reed's version of the diminutive Marvel hero is off to a solid start with $6.4 million brought in Thursday night. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, that number is below the $11.2 million Thursday for "Guardians of the Galaxy" or the $10.2 million for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," however it's only slightly behind "Thor: The Dark World" which had an opening night of $7.1 million on its way to $85.7 million for the weekend.

This week's other big release -- the Judd Apatow-directed "Trainwreck" starring Amy Schumer -- brought in $1.8 million Thursday. With an R-rating and a more limited release, that comedy won't rival Marvel for the weekend overall. So the real competition remains the animated hit "Minions" which grossed $115.8 million total last week.
