The “Ant-Man” sequel looks to have familiar faces behind the camera as well as in front of it: The Hollywood Reporter has word that Peyton Reed is “in negotiations” with Marvel Studios to return for the 2018 sequel, “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”
Despite a long period in development and creative shifts leading to a reputation as a troubled production, the original “Ant-Man,” released domestically this past July, has made $454.7 million worldwide, including a headline-grabbing $43.2 million opening this past weekend in China. While the film’s domestic total hasn’t come close to the massive numbers of Marvel Studios’ “Avengers” or “Iron Man” films, “Ant-Man” has outperformed 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” and 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk.”
Reed joined “Ant-Man” in June 2014, a month after initial director Edgar Wright — who had been attached to the film since 2006 — left the project.
No screenwriters have yet been attached to “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which is scheduled for release on July 6, 2018. Stars Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly are both on board to return as the respective title characters.
