As reported by Deadline, Peña (Ant-Man and the Wasp, A Wrinkle in Time) will be taking on the role made famous by Ricardo Montalban during the initial television run of Fantasy Island. The upcoming adaptation was co-written by Wadlow and fellow Truth or Dare screenwriters Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs.
Produced by Aaron Spelling, the original Fantasy Island found Mr. Roarke and his sidekick Tattoo (played by Hervé Villechaize) greeting visitors who had journeyed to the titular island seeking to live out their deepest desires and wildest fantasies -- always for a price.
Created as a pair of made-for-television movies in 1977 and 1978, the show ran on ABC from 1978 to 1984. The series was briefly revived in 1998, while a third revival in 2015 did not make it past the pilot stage.
While very little regarding the plot and aesthetic of the cinematic Fantasy Island is known, the upcoming adaptation, written by the same team as horror movie Truth or Dare, is expected to hue darker than the original series, heightening the supernatural aspects of the island.
