Ant-Man and the Wasp star Hannah John-Kamen has reportedly dropped out of the upcoming Red Sonja adaptation.

John-Kamen, who was set to play Red Sonja herself, recently exited the production along with its director, Joey Soloway, reports The Illuminerdi. No reason was given for the pair's departure but it's understood that Altered Carbon veteran M.J. Bassett is already set to replace Soloway.

John-Kamen, who last appeared on the big screen in 2021's Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon Citysigned on to star in Red Sonja back in May 2021. At the time, Soloway was adamant that the project had found its perfect leading lady. "Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she IS Red Sonja," the director raved. "Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together."

Soloway was hired to helm Red Sonja in June 2019, after X-Men director Bryan Singer left the production in the wake of a series of sexual abuse allegations leveled against him. Soloway was initially excited by the prospect of tackling the property, commenting, "I can really have so much fun with Red Sonja... I just really look forward to not only going to the edge of what I've ever written and directed before but to the edge of the genre as well."

Although Red Sonja has apparently lost its star and director, the sword and sorcery adaptation has retained writer Tasha Huo. Huo penned several episodes of the upcoming prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin on Netflix and is the showrunner for the streaming platform's Tomb Raider animated series, which is currently in development.

Millennium Pictures first announced Red Sonja back in 2017 and confirmed the film would be a reboot of the property unrelated to the 1985 box office bomb, which starred Brigitte Nielsen as the titular warrior. That film loosely adapted the Marvel comics by Red Sonja's co-creators Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, who were themselves partly inspired by Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian. By contrast, the new Red Sonja movie takes its inspiration from the comics currently published by Dynamite Entertainment, including writer/artist team Gail Simone and Walter Geovani's acclaimed 2013 run on the title.

Red Sonja does not yet have a release date.
