Ant-Man and The Wasp: Janet Van Dyne’s Powers, Explained

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp, in theaters now.

Fans who were disappointed director Peyton Reed didn’t show much of Janet van Dyne’s Wasp in 2015’s Ant-Man save for a cameo highlighting how she got lost in the Quantum Realm are most certainly enjoying the character’s proper introduction in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Sure, the character (as played by Michelle Pfeiffer) is limited to the movie’s final act, but as short as her appearance is there, it’s a pretty sweet one. This is because the veteran superhero isn’t a damsel in distress who’s merely rescued, she’s someone who returns to our reality with quite a lot to offer.

Not only does she come back with deep insight into the mysterious microverse, we also learn she has powers and abilities which Reed will surely need another movie to flesh out.

As Janet puts it when Hank Pym (Michael Pym) uses the Quantum Tunnel and a special pod to finally retrieve her, “This place changes you in ways you can’t imagine.” She tells him she had to adapt and evolve in the sub-atomic “void,” which defied the laws of space and time. And so with the rules of physics and conventional science out the window, it’s no surprise someone who spent three decades or so there re-emerges a changed person.
