During this year's San Diego Comic-Con, footage got shown of the upcoming film, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. And at first glance, the humor that has made the franchise such a hit was still intact, but there's a new level of maturity thanks to the appearance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's next big villain, Kang the Conqueror. But aside from that, trailer descriptions have also painted Scott Lang in a light that hasn't made fans too happy. However, even though it may seem like his characterization is in jeopardy, this may all be a natural progression.

The trailer footage explains that the fame of saving the universe from Thanos had gone to Scott's head. In fact, he's become so famous that he hasn't devoted nearly as much time to his now teenage daughter, Cassie. That has caused a slight disconnect between the two of them where Cassie is making mistakes similar to her father, and Scott isn't nearly as able to try and understand her as he should. But by following the timeline of Scott and his characterization over the years, this stint of self-indulgence may be totally in character for him.

When audiences first met Scott, he was a criminal who had just been released from prison. He didn't have the best luck and quickly had to resort to crime to ensure he could still see his daughter again. By becoming Ant-Man, he could finally show his daughter that he was a hero, but when Thanos' Snap took five years from him, the daughter he had wasn't there anymore. Instead, he now had to make up for the five years he lost with a girl who grew up without him during the most formative years of her life. As a result, there will be some disconnection between them as their relationship has changed dramatically.

On the other hand, Scott had finally found himself in a position where he was winning for a change. Logically, when handed the short end of the stick most of his life, he let fame and adoration get to his head more than most. Therefore, his behavior may be very common to his character. If anything, it's a rough patch between him and his daughter, spawned by his sudden and meteoric rise to fame. But there's no doubt that by the end of the film, Scott will finally ground himself and realize what's important.

This change for Scott also fits perfectly with the seemingly more mature tone that Phase Five has been teasing. He may still be light-hearted and fun-loving, but with the addition of Kang, things will likely get more serious. As a result, Scott may have to face even greater consequences for his childish actions, like having to rebuild a bridge all but destroyed between him and his daughter. But once mended, Scott may be even more of a hero to Cassie than ever.

The Ant-Man franchise has always been about how anyone can make mistakes, even heroes. Scott Lang has never been a stranger to messing things up, and this will likely happen on a larger scale in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. But just because he's more self-centered than before doesn't mean his character has been lost or assassinated. Everything Scott has done has been for Cassie, and she's also why he will brave the Quantum Realm once again if it means he can bring her back home safe and sound.

To see Scott's new lease on life, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania releases Feb. 17, 2023
