When the news hit that Lovecraft Country star Johnathan Majors was reportedly cast to play Kang in Ant-Man 3, it got the rumor mill running hard with people imagining Kang as the next big bad for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

However, while Kang is a world-threatening, omega-level supervillain, there might be something else at play here. The new WandaVision trailer hinted that Scarlet Witch might be creating her twins, and if the story from the comics plays out on the big screen, Wanda might become the next big bad in the MCU. That means Kang in Ant-Man 3 might play a different role.

If Wanda creates her twins and then loses them, that sets up the MCU to introduce Wiccan and Speed. These two characters possess the essence of the twins and are basically Wanda's kids grown up. They are also two members of the Young Avengers. Another member has already been introduced in Cassie Lang, the daughter of Ant-Man. Now, there might be a fourth member coming in the third outing for Ant-Man — Iron Lad.

Kang The Conquerer

The news that Johnathan Majors is playing Kang in Ant-Man 3 might be a misdirection. For one thing, Kang is a major superheavyweight bad guy and is a lot more than Ant-Man can face, even with the help of his friends. However, the idea that the new Kang might show up through time travel using the Quantum Realm makes him fit well in Ant-Man's world. The thought here is that it isn't Kang the world conqueror that shows up. Majors might be playing the young version of Kang, the kid who shows up calling himself Iron Lad.

In the comics, he never told any of the Young Avengers he was Kang and instead operated as their version of Iron Man. However, he came to this world for one reason. He wanted to find a way to stop himself from becoming Kang when he grew up. Kang, and Iron Lad, is Nathaniel Richards, and each timeline in the Marvel Universe had a different outcome for the villain, but in almost every case, he became a villain. However, something happened in Iron Lad's world that changed his history. A bully was beating him up, and before the bully could cut Nathaniel's throat, Kang showed up from the future and saved him. This rescue stopped the injury that almost killed him and bankrupted his parents when Kang was young.

Iron Lad in the comics

Kang gave his younger self armor and showed him a glimpse of his future where he was Kang the Conqueror, a man who conquered worlds and battled the Avengers. His goal was to lead Nathaniel into achieving this destiny earlier than he did, but what happened was the opposite. Nathaniel wanted nothing to do with this future, attacked his future self and traveled back in time to the present-day Marvel Universe. He wanted the Avengers to protect him, but they had disbanded in the comics, as they have in the movies. To help protect and keep himself safe in case Kang found him, he put together the next generation of the Avengers -- the Young Avengers -- and their genesis was thanks to the work of Iron Lad. This story could begin in Ant-Man 3.
