The Marvel Cinematic Universe may have found its Kang the Conqueror.

According to Deadline, Lovecraft Country star Johnathan Majors has joined Ant-Man 3, possibly as the time-traveling Marvel villain. The report states Majors will play a lead role in the film. Although the studio did not comment, the report's sources indicated he is "likely" to appear as Kang. Additionally, his Ant-Man 3 appearance will potentially build the character up to be a main villain in the franchise.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1964's The Avengers #8, the man known as Nathaniel Richards famously made a name for himself as Kang the Conqueror, although he has gone by many different aliases. Hailing from the 30th century, Kang jumped back and forth through time, battling the likes of the Avengers and Fantastic Four. Some of the more memorable storylines he's been a part of include the Avengers Forever miniseries and "Kang Dynasty," along with his involvement in the Young Avengers and Uncanny Avengers.

In addition to Lovecraft Country, Majors has starred in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, White Boy Rick and When We Rise. His previous credits also include Jungleland, Captive State, Much Ado About Nothing and Da 5 Bloods with the late Chadwick Boseman.

Previously, the MCU's Infinity Saga pit the Avengers and their allies against Thanos, who became a universe-ending threat when he acquired all six Infinity Stones. He was ultimately defeated at the end of Avengers: Endgame, where Iron Man sacrificed his life to snap away the Mad Titan and his army. Prior to his starring roles in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, though, he appeared in brief cameo roles, as a shadowy but clearly powerful threat. Given his power set and role in the comics, Kang could potentially assume a similar role, serving as an overarching villain that ultimately reunites the MCU's heroes.

Ant-Man is just one of several films in Marvel Studios' Phase Four plans. The film, which is in development from director Peyton Reed and writer Jeff Loveness, will release alongside Black Widow, Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man 3, Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Sequels to Black Panther and Captain Marvel are also in the works.

Directed by Peyton Reed, Ant-Man 3 stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Johnathan Majors. The film has yet to receive an official release date.
