UPDATED 6/29/06 – We’re excited to announce that we’ve extended the deadline for the contest below to July 7th, 2006 at Noon Pacific! So, you’ve got extra time to spend on those entries this holiday weekend! In between hot dogs, swimming and apple pie, naturally. But remember, you shouldn’t swim for half an hour after a meal, so that’s plenty of time to color your favorite page of “Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.!” Gotta love how that worked out.
When I was a kid, I used to draw in my comics. I know, I know, it wasn’t a good idea and it ruined the value of the comics, but I was a kid and what did I know? I was just having fun! I’d pull out my colored pencils and recolor Spider-Man blue or create a whole new costume for Wolverine. I think my favorite was changing Cyclops’ optic blasts into rainbow colors. Why not? Why couldn’t I have it my way? 25 years later, Marvel’s letting me finally have it my way.
Out this Wednesday, May 24th, is a variant edition of the Warren Ellis/Stuart Immonen series “Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.” #5. This variant, called the “Crayon Butchery Variant,” features the same Immonen/Grawbadger artwork featured in the regular edition, but here the pages haven’t been colored yet and it’s presented to you as a coloring book! Where was this book when I was a kid?
To celebrate the release of this book, Comic Book Resources and Marvel.com have joined forces for the Nextwave #5 Crayon Butchery Variant Contest! All you have to do is pick up the comic this Wednesday, choose a page to color and submit your entry to win some fabulous prizes! The grand prize winner will receive a page of original art from the issue, all for just coloring in a comic book!
Allright, so here’s the skinny. Pick up “Nextwave #5 Crayon Butchery Variant” this Wednesday. Then, get yourself some crayons or colored pencils and color the page or pages of your choice. Then, scan those pages in and send your entry to firstname.lastname@example.org. The pages must be scanned at 72 DPI and hey, no Photoshop people! We want to help you recapture a bit of your youth, so steal your kids crayons and get cracking! Don’t have a scanner? No problem, you can mail your finished pages to us and we’ll scan them for you. You can send them to:

And what do you get for all your hard work? CBR will collect the entries and choose a first prize winner, two second prize winners and seven honorable mentions. The grand prize winner will take home a page of original art from “Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.” by Stuart Immonen and Wade von Grawbadger and have their entry published in the letters page of “Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E.” #7. Our three runners up will each receive a hand-colored page of the “Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E ” #5 Crayon Butchery Variant by Stuart Immonen, Wade von Grawbadger and Dave McCaig (selected at random). And finally, the top ten entries will be collected and published as a digital comic on Marvel.com! How cool is that? Your name in lights on Marvel.com and in a Marvel Comic Book!
With each entry please include your name, your e-mail address, your phone number and your birth date. All entries must be received by
June 28th July 7th at Noon Pacific and the winner will be announced shortly there after All entrants must be at least 13 years of age. Children under the age of 13 are not eligible. NEXTWAVE #5 CRAYON BUTCHERY VARIANT PRIMER PAGE
HOW TO COLOR THE NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E. CRAYON BUTCHERY VARIANT:
- Don’t panic. It isn’t alive.
- Get some crayons. Our Mission Statement here at Beyond © is: THE MORE, THE BETTER. So get yourself a lot of crayons so you have a lot of different colors. We don’t care how you get them. Buy them. Borrow them. Steal them. DON’T STEAL THEM. You can make them, but make sure you have a child present (to keep up appearances).
- Don’t eat the crayons. They may be toxic. Even if they say they’re non-toxic DON’T TRUST THEM. Our Mission Statement here at Beyond © is: DON’T BELIEVE THINGS.
- Press a crayon against the paper and drag it. There should be a line the color of the crayon you are using on your paper. That is how you color. I invented this process.
Stay within the lines. Unless you don’t want to. It’s standard to Western philosophy that staying inside the lines is the accepted way of coloring. The below pictures should clarify what “staying within the lines” means.
On the other hand, if you’re the kind of person who marches to their own drummer, be free. Color however the heck you want to. We at Beyond © don’t recommend this. In fact, our Mission Statement is: “DRUMMER” IS A SYNONYM FOR “JERK.”
- Show your teeth. Whether it’s a smile or a growly-face, Beyond © will accept it.
Follow these six directions and fly, monkey-person!
Special thanks go out to Nick Lowe, Jim McCann, John Dokes and everyone at Marvel for their assistance with this contest.
