It was announced in May 2020 that both of Rice's best-selling series, Vampire Chronicles and The Lives of the Mayfair Witches, had been acquired by AMC Networks to adapt her books into multiple live-action television shows. This includes the series adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, which was first adapted into a 1994 movie starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. At the time, Rice called the deal "one of the most significant and thrilling deals of my long career," going on to say that it was her dream "to see the worlds of my two biggest series united under a single roof so that filmmakers could explore the expansive and interconnected universe of my vampires and witches."
