Anne Hathaway dropped a huge piece of Batman movie trivia by revealing how she thought her Catwoman audition for The Dark Knight Rises was to play Harley Quinn.

While Hathaway eventually suited up as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, she told BBC Radio 1 she assumed she was auditioning to play the unhinged Harley Quinn. "I came in and I had this lovely Vivienne Westwood kind of beautiful-but-mad tailoring top with stripes going everywhere. And I wore these flat Joker-ey looking shoes. And I was trying to give Chris [Nolan] these crazy little smiles," Hathaway explained. "About an hour into the meeting he said 'Well, I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but it's Catwoman.' And I was shifting into a different gear. 'Now ok, we're slinky. We're slinky. And I hate my shirt. I love my shirt, but I hate it right now. We're slinky.'"

Given Heath Ledger's Oscar-winning performance in The Dark Knight and his own desire to play the Joker again, Hathaway may have thought some continuation of the character was going to be in Nolan's third movie. Even after Ledger's tragic death in 2008, there were reported plans to feature Joker locked up in Arkham Asylum. Having Mr. J's love interest on a vengeful rampage would've been a way around the issue, however, The Dark Knight Rises decided to leave his fate unknown.

With The Dark Knight Rises giving Christian Bale's Caped Crusader a definitive end, it means Hathaway's tenure as Catwoman was relatively short-lived. As it stands, Zoe Kravitz is getting in shape to play Catwoman for Matt Reeves' The Batman. When it comes to Harley Quinn, it was only four years after The Dark Knight Rises that Margot Robbie swung a mallet onto screens for David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

After Harley's breakout addition to Batman: The Animated Series, the character has continued on her fan-favorite status inside Batman's world. As well as appearing in comics, video games and live-action, Robbie has put her mark on the role in Suicide Squad and 2019's Birds of Prey. Robbie's future with the character is set with James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad, so it looks like Hathaway has missed her chance to play the Clown Princess of Crime for now.
