WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Annabelle Comes Home, in theaters now.

Annabelle Comes Home features a surprisingly well-constructed cast of characters. While all of the teenagers who get targeted by the ghouls within the Warrens' artifact room conform to horror cliches to an extent, they each have a solid amount of depth. Judy (McKenna Grace), Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) and Danielle (Katie Sarfie) are all well-constructed takes on archetypal horror movie characters.

However, the biggest character surprise in Annabelle Comes Home is Bob (Michael Cimino). As a hapless neighbor of the Warrens with a huge crush on Mary Ellen, Bob gets tangled up in the hauntings that are soon targeting the three girls. However, he actually manages to survive the events of the movie, come to the rescue of Judy and even ends the film with a date to the homecoming dance. All in all, Bob does pretty well for himself by the end of Annabelle Comes Home.

The Guy Next Door

Annabelle Comes Home

Bob is introduced early in the film, as a a nice young man working at his father's grocery store. Mary Ellen clearly has a crush on him, which her best friend Danielle teases her about, and the feeling is mutual. Bob is just as adorable awkward with her as she is with him. He fumbles over his words and can barely speak when she's nearby. He goes to say hello that night, where he awkwardly (but with a smile) explains his nickname: he's the equipment manager for the basketball team, which has led to people constantly saying "Bob's got balls."

He even decides to take advice from the local pizza delivery man to try and woo Mary Ellen. To that end, he grabs his guitar and plays a song for her outside the window, with enough competency to show he clearly knows what he's doing to a point. Still, he's nervous enough that he skips a few notes and his voice breaks during his song. Where love interests in most horror movies are jerks or simple murder fodder, Bob is instantly charming.

Bob Plays Chicken

After the song, Mary Ellen rushes out to meet Bob, encouraged by Judy and Danielle. However, Danielle had already unleashed the spirits within the artifact room, including the hell-hound. The ravenous beast only really appears outside, meaning Bob is the only person at the house that can easily be targeted. Bob sprints away from the creature, mistaking it for a werewolf. To his credit though, Bob doesn't waste time screaming. Instead, he books it to safety, or at least as close to safety as he can get.

Bob ends up hiding in the chicken coop. Although he tries to keep them all in the coop, he's not willing to risk himself to try and save the one that heads outside. The hell-hound makes quick work of the chicken, proving that Bob had the right idea. He manages to hide away long enough to outlast the hell-hound, which leaves to attack someone else. In a genre where hapless teenagers are murdered left and right for making bad decisions, it's refreshing to see a character who's willing and able to figure out how to survive.

Bob's Got Balls

While Bob has a strong survival instinct, it doesn't mean he hides for the entire film. On the contrary, his timely return to the narrative ends up saving Judy after she heads outside to grab Mary Ellen's inhaler from her car. She's immediately targeted by the hell-hound, who rips apart the roof of Mary Ellen's car in an attempt to get at her, but Bob rushes out at the sound of Judy's screams and lays out the wolf with his guitar. This gives Judy the chance she needs to escape back into the house with the inhaler, and Bob takes the opportunity to rush back to the chicken coop to hide from the now enraged hell-hound.

Male love interests in horror films are usually jerks who try too hard to be smooth or ultimately prove themselves to be cowards. In a startling display of competency, Bob figures out how to survive, and he doesn't abandon anyone in the process. For all of his work, he gets the kind of happy ending. that characters in horror films almost never get. At the end of the film, he gets a date with Mary Ellen and seemingly enters into a relationship with her. As Patrick Wilson's Ed Warren jokingly says at the end of the film, "Bob's got balls."

Written and directed by Gary Dauberman, Annabelle Comes Home stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman and Katie Sarife. The film is in theaters now.
