Less than a week after word surfaced that Universal Pictures is putting "Pitch Perfect 3" into development, the studio has confirmed the return of stars Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson. The sequel is targeted for release on July 21, 2017.

Franchise screenwriter Kay Cannon is in talks to write the follow-up to "Pitch Perfect 2," which has grossed more than $260 million since its May 15 release. It's already the highest-grossing musical comedy of all time, and it's still raking in money.

It's unknown whether franchise producer/co-star Elizabeth Banks, who made her directorial debut with "Pitch Perfect 2," will helm the third installment.

Actress Hailee Steinfeld, who joined the cast for the second movie (and subsequently signed a record deal), in already on board for "Pitch Perfect 3."
