Something that's common among anime that most fans probably don't even think about is talking animals. Even the most popular shows will have at least one and it's not tied to a particular genre, either. From romance anime to action, most shows can find a way to insert a talking anime in a way that makes sense.

In fact, it's almost a shame when a series doesn't have at least one talking animal no matter how serious the anime actually is. Adding an interesting character with the potential to have a great backstory will only make these anime better whether it's a human or something else.

10 Assassin Should Have Been An Animal (Fate/Zero)

Fate Zero

Fate/Zero is a series that pits mages and their servants against each other as they fight for the holy grail. The series can be incredibly dark but it still manages to have a sense of humor as well. Despite the fact that the series is a fantasy with magic, there isn't a single talking animal in it.

The anime even points out that none of the familiars can talk. A talking animal would fit right into a series like this and would even make it more interesting. For example, the servant Assassin would have been much more interesting if they could use magic to shapeshift into different animals and spy on the others.

9 The Series Would Improve With Communication (My Roommate Is A Cat)

Subaru and haru My Roommate is a cat

My Roommate is a Cat is an adorable anime about a manga artist that adopts a stray cat after his parents died in an accident. Although the audience is able to hear the cat's thoughts, it can't actually communicate with its human companion.

The anime does a good job at demonstrating the relationship between humans and pets but it would be even better if they could actually communicate with each other. It would add a fun twist to a pretty normal story and allow the two main characters to have an even stronger bond.

8 The Anime Is Missing Something (Flying Witch)

Makota in Flying Witch.

For a story about witches and magic, Flying Witch is lacking when it comes to talking animals. The anime follows Makoto on her journey to becoming a fully-fledged witch. Even though the story is entertaining, it feels as though it's missing something without any talking animals.

There's even an entire episode dedicated to Makoto's familiar, but because they don't talk, the audience has no idea what they're feeling. Considering the relationship between witches and their familiars, it would add a lot to the story if Makoto was able to talk to her familiar, especially considering how air-headed she tends to be.

7 Kirara Is The Only Demon That Can't Talk (Inuyasha)

Kirara from Inuyasha

For an anime with tons of animal-like demons, the actual animals in Inuyasha don't do much talking. Kirara the cat demon is one example of the various animal demons that don't actually talk but considering all the other demons that do talk, it only makes sense for her to be able to talk as well.

Furthermore, Sango and Kirara clearly have a very close bond. The fans could learn a lot more about the two characters if they were allowed to converse with each other. Not to mention, Kirara is the only demon who can't talk. so it makes more sense storywise for her to be able to communicate with the group as well.

6 Talking Animals Are The Kind Of Humor This Anime Needs (One-Punch Man)

Saitama One Punch Man

As a comedy anime, One-Punch Man has tons of colorful characters. There are heroes who play their cards straight like Genos, but then there are other characters like Watchdog Man, who's just a guy in a dog costume.

Considering the amount of downright weird heroes there are in this series, it would only make sense for at least one of them to be a talking animal. It would add to the ridiculousness of the series and really take the comedy aspect to the next level. This series is supposed to be a satire of shonen anime, which often have talking animals.

5 Kurama Would Be Terrifying As A Full Fox (Yu Yu Hakusho)

Anime Hiei Yusuke Kurama Kuwabara Yu Yu Hakusho

Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic anime filled with action, adventure, and fantasy. While the series showcases several types of unique demons, it lacks the animal apparitions that Japan is most known for. Even though Kurama is a fox demon, fans never get to see him fully transform into a fox, which is definitely a shame.

While his humanoid fox demon form is definitely cool, fans would have liked to see Kurama as a talking fox. It definitely would have added to the wow factor of his first transformation. Plus, seeing a giant talking fox with menacing glowing eyes could have added a creepy factor to a character that often came across as prim and proper.

4 The Anime Would Be More Fun With Talking Animals (Fena: Pirate Princess)

Fena and the antling twins examine the stone

Fena: Pirate Princess is a more recent anime that failed to meet the audience's expectations. While the beginning of the series was great, the incredibly confusing ending was lackluster at best. The biggest problem with this anime is that it started out as a fun adventure but then took itself too seriously by the end.

Adding more lighthearted elements like talking animals could have really saved this series. Fena does have a dog character, but unfortunately, the series seemed to forget they existed about halfway through. If it stuck with its more comedic elements and introduced a few talking creatures, this anime could have been much more fun to watch.

3 Talking Animals Would Help Kids Understand What's Happening (Beyblade)

Beyblade Tyson and Bladers

For many fans, Beyblade is the series that introduced them to anime. It's cheesy and definitely meant for kids but there's still a load of nostalgia attached to the series. It managed to turn Beyblade competitions into an exciting story and that's mainly because of the spirits that existed in the Beyblades.

However, it definitely would have improved the story if the spirits were actually able to communicate with the characters. Most of the emotions were assumed and sometimes the audience struggled to understand what the spirits were actually feeling. For a younger audience, allowing the spirits to talk would definitely help fans understand the story better.

2 Allowing The Goblins To Talk May Improve The Story (Goblin Slayer)

Goblin Slayer Leads His Party In Goblin Slayer

Goblin Slayer is a controversial series, and rightfully so considering how it tends to handle its subject matter. The story deals with sexual assault and trauma and instead of addressing those sensitive topics it usually uses it for shock value.

However, there are ways the story could have been done better, including allowing the goblins to talk instead of just being mindless beasts. Many fans theorized that the Goblin Slayer himself was a goblin, which would have added an interesting twist to the story. But that wasn't the case so the fans had no reason to sympathize with the goblins at all.

1 Talking Dragons Are Just Cool (Burn The Witch)

Ninny And Noel Fly In Burn The Witch

While Burn The Witch takes place in the same universe as Bleach, it lacks the talking animals that the original series had. This anime is full of dragons and other magical creatures and it definitely would have added to the story if the dragons were allowed to talk.

Allowing the dragons to have intelligence definitely would have been more interesting and made them far deadlier to the protagonists. Not to mention, fans are far more invested in creatures that can think for themselves and aren't just mindless beasts.
