When it comes to anime, villains come in all shapes and sizes (sometimes quite literally!), with fans enjoying the sheer variety of evil or morally grey characters they get to choose from. Sometimes the villains are maniacal mass murderers hell-bent on destroying humanity, while sometimes villains are complete goofballs whose plans never go the way they want them to.

And sometimes, fans see villains that are perfect in almost every way, except for the fact that they were responsible for their own downfall. This could be due to sheer arrogance, stupidity or sometimes even overestimating one’s opponent.

10 ZaShunina: Gave In To His Own Emotions Instead Of Following A More Logical Path (Kado: The Right Answer)

Yaha-kui zaShunina (KADO The Right answer) anime

This alien’s ultimate aim was to take humans to his dimension to gain new knowledge. However, he let his feelings for Shindou get in his way and instead of slowly easing him into his plan, dropped a bomb at the young man, shocking him into a vehement denial.

To make things worse, he made Shindou’s clone without his consent, which is what made Shindou realize how far gone zaShunina was, forcing him to come up with a successful way to kill the alien.

9 Kureto: Believed Himself To Be Smarter Than All Of Humanity (Seraph Of The End)

Kureto dabbled with magic and science for years, ultimately letting loose the angel within Mirai Kimizuki on the battlefield. His arrogance was on full display when he’d been backed into a corner but that he had no contingency plan for a situation where things did not go his way.

As a result, not only did he lose a vast majority of his soldiers, but he was also forced to retreat on the battlefield after his side was overwhelmed by an onslaught of vampire soldiers.

8 James Coleman: This Seasoned Art Critic Was Easily Fooled By A Group Of Con Artists (Great Pretender)

This highly snobbish man’s arrogance was his downfall. This "James Bond of the art world" was a famous British art appraiser who was quite prideful of his ability to differentiate between genuine and fake pieces of art.

Laurent and his gang of con artists took advantage of this very arrogance, fooling him not only into buying a perfect replica of a famous painting but showing his true colors to his lover who eventually dumped him.

7 Nanami: Her Body Was Unable To Handle All The Powers She Had Accumulated (Katanagatari)

Nanami (Katanagatari) 4

From episode 4 onward, fans saw flashes of Nanami’s childhood where her father told her he wouldn’t let her be her successor because he was afraid her powers would make her unstable.

She did not listen to him, accumulated powers and Deviant Blades from other samurai, and ended up becoming so strong that her failing body was unable to handle all the powers it was wielding. Due to this, she forced her brother to kill her so that she could die in peace.

6 Blitz Enders: Ended Up Having An Audience For his Murder (Moriarty The Patriot)

Blitz Enders was a nobleman who maintained the façade of a genial member of society, while secretly hunting and killing “lower” class people for fun. Moriarty was aware of this fact so he wanted to expose the man as a criminal in front of an audience, due to which he’d lose face in society as well.

He baited Blitz with a “useless mongrel” who “deserved to be killed” and Blitz blindly trusted Moriarty. However, things did not go as planned and he ended up showcasing his murderous side to an audience comprised of high-class society members.

5 Moral: Took On Two Powers Meant For A Body That Could Only House One (Hamatora)

Moral was obsessed with Nice and his impossibly strong abilities. His obsession leads him to inject himself with a dead Minimum Holder’s ability (the Forbidden Minimum), despite already having his own Mimicry Minimum.

In the penultimate battle between the two men, Moral initially had the upper hand against Nice but eventually, his body was unable to withstand two Minimums inside it due to which he coughed up blood and the fight ended with him backing down.

4 Minatsuki: Allowed Her Warped Memories To Shape Her Evil Lifestyle (Deadman Wonderland)

For reasons never explained in the anime, Minatsuki grew up hating her parents for doing things they’d never done –like assaulting her and abandoning her during an earthquake.

These negative emotions within her were exacerbated with the absence of her brother Yu, as a result of which she grew up to be a mentally unhinged and sadistic girl who enjoyed torturing and killing people for fun.

3 Yuno: Her Obsession With Yuki Resulted In Her Never Truly Being With Him (Future Diary)

Yuno Parries A Knife

Even though Yuno’s yandere behavior made for entertaining antics on screen, everything she did was so that she could be with Yuki, including lying to him and killing the ones he loved, which usually ended up backfiring on her.

Even Yuki himself admitted he was in a toxic relationship with her and despite all the horrible things she did to make Yuki love him, she was never truly able to be with him in any of the three timelines in the anime.

Rui instantly regretted killing his parents, but it was too late by then. Muzan arrived and emotionally manipulated the young boy to become a demon and work as his minion.

To make matters worse, he abused, assaulted, and manipulated all his demon “family” members, due to which they were always scared of him. In the end, Rui died without ever knowing what it meant to be truly loved by one’s family.

1 Light: His Overconfidence Was The Only Reason Near Was Able To Catch Him (Death Note)

Even though there are multiple instances where Light reacted before thinking, perhaps his worst mistake was when he ordered Teru to write Near’s name on the Death Note and then arrogantly taunted Near in front of his own colleagues.

When Near didn’t die, Light was caught in his own words after which even his colleagues gave up defending him, forcing him to run away and get shot in the process.
