A solid villain, or at least a solid antagonist, is necessary to any good story. Anime has a plethora of examples of villains who are interesting, well-written characters.

Predictably enough, in most stories, the hero wins in the end, defeating the villains. This tends to be due to the unbreakable will of the protagonist, his power and strength, or sometimes even plot armor —the protagonist is safe from any failure he can't come back from because the story needs its protagonist. However, some villains caused their own downfall by simply and stupidly running their mouths.

10 Lordgenome Let Gloating Get The Best Of Him (Gurren Lagann)

Spiral King Gurren Lagann

This villain quickly goes from a threat to laughable. At the start of the series, Lordgenome, also known as the Spiral King, is a ruthless oppressor of humankind and is the reason they have to live underground. He is extremely strong and causes Team Dai-Gurren a lot of trouble.

During a fight with Simon, the protagonist, Lordgenome manages to destroy Simon's Lagann, his personal gunman robot. While he gloats and celebrates his victory, however, Simon is able to kill him by using his Core Drill. The lesson here: don't let your guard down just because you assume you won't be beaten.

9 Team Rocket Is Kind Of Laughable (Pokémon)

Team Rocket (Pokemon)

Jessie, James, Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light! Despite being iconic, Team Rocket is essentially a laughing stock in the world of Pokémon. They plan and plan and plot and think that they have a win in the bag, until it turns out they don't. They talk a big game, but they are usually defeated by their own incompetence.

Any time they show up to try to take Ash's Pokémon, they lose. This duo is certainly cocky, and most of these losses come directly after talking themselves up, acting as if they are absolutely spectacular. However, whenever they "blast off again," viewers can see that they are not quite what they claim.

8 Shou Tucker Lost Just About Everything (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Shou Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist smirking

Shou Tucker lost big time. He lost his daughter, his wife, and arguably, his humanity. How did this happen? He bit off more than he could chew.

Essentially, this man talked himself into a situation he saw only one way out of. He created a talking chimera and became a legend. Only, no one realized he actually had to sacrifice his wife to do it. And when the military wanted to see this amazing ability again, he sacrificed his daughter to make a second chimera. He put his celebrated ability over the lives of his family. Ultimately, his position as a state alchemist was more important. What a guy.

7 Izaya Orihara Likes To Talk To Talk (Durarara!!)

Izaya Orihara (Durarara!!)

There's no doubt that Izaya Orihara is extremely smart. His major flaw, however, is his god complex. When facing off against Shizuo Hewajima, Izaya's strategy is always to taunt the other. Izaya does not necessarily talk himself up, he just talks. This is part of the reason many see him as childish. When he's talking, it's usually a manipulation tactic, putting ideas in others' heads and such.

Because Izaya has a god complex, he looks down on humans and seems to believe that he can't lose. Usually, he is one step ahead of everyone, and he doesn't lose. However, at the end of the series, he is driven out of Ikebukuro by Shizuo.

6 Deep Sea King Is Pure Cocky (One-Punch Man)

Deep Sea King after defeating Class A Hero Stinger

The One-Punch Man series is crawling with villains, but Deep Sea King is a memorable one for sure. The Deep Sea King goes on and on about how superior his race is to humans. His arrogance wound up being his main issue, as well as how he underestimated Saitama.

During Deep Sea King's attack, many heroes tried to stop him, including Genos, but they were defeated. Eventually, Saitama showed up, but Deep Sea King did not think much of him at all. As the story goes, the Deep Sea King was subsequently ended with a single punch.

5 Speed O' Sound Sonic Was Arrogant but learned (One-Punch Man)

One Punch Man Speed-o'-Sound Sonic in a mask

Speed O' Sound Sonic has a big goal: to defeat Saitama, who is also known as One-Punch Man. As soon as Sonic realizes just how strong Saitama is, he feels he has something to prove by defeating Saitama. He is not shy about loudly sharing this goal, especially while he fights Saitama. On multiple occasions, he persisted in trying to defeat Saitama, but to no avail. Sonic loves to go straight to attack, even when the enemy is much stronger than himself. He is also quite cocky.

Sonic has actually had some great character development since. He's truly tried to become better. Proof of his character development includes teaching a valuable lesson to a hunter he meets: that overconfidence can hinder you if it means you're too confident to change your ways, which is a lesson Sonic himself learned. Who knows, maybe, just maybe, someday he will beat Saitama.

4 Miki Talks A Lot For A Parasite (Parasyte)

Miki and parasite

In the world of Parasyte: The Maxim, the parasites which are the villains of the show do not generally have personalities. Miki is an exception to this, as he tries to show a lot of emotion. Though, it is forced and fake.

When he is sent to kill the protagonist, Shinichi Izumi, Miki doesn't take it super seriously, and seems like he's just in it to have fun. He taunts Shinichi repeatedly. This is where Shinichi ultimately defeats him.

3 Tomura Shigaraki Is The Ultimate Man-child (My Hero Academia)

My Hero Academia Villain

The leader of the League of Villains has been referred to as a man-child by characters within the show, and rightfully so. Saying he "talked too much" would be an understatement. He's childish, he complains, and he quite literally throws a tantrum when a plan doesn't go his way.

He goes on about how much he hates hero society, and more specifically, the hero All Might. He seems very scary and powerful, and he may be, but he loses to a bunch of high schoolers on multiple occasions, and is a bit of a coward. Even after all that, he still tries to prove himself and his League.

2 God Serena Is Arrogant & Flamboyant (Fairy Tail)

God Serena Fairy Tail

This villain was actually defeated by another villain, interestingly, and his arrogance is mostly to blame. God Serena loves nothing more than attention. He is described as a "flamboyant" guy.

Acnologia is a fearsome dragon slayer, and ironically, God Serena had the goal to kill Acnologia. When approached by Acnologia, God Serena is initially calm and confident. However, God Serena starts to run his mouth and is obliterated in a way that is almost comical.

1 Dio Brando Is Notorious For The Absurd Things He Says (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)

Dio from JoJo

Dio Brando is one of the most tenacious villains ever. This proves to be both a blessing and a curse for him. There is not a lot he won't do for power: murder, manipulation, and more. Dio is notorious for running his mouth, to the point that he became a meme.

In his final fight with Jotaro, he starts out cocky. He manages to make Jotaro so angry, that Jotaro quite literally rips him apart.
