There's no other anime transformation as amazing and iconic as Son Goku’s Super Saiyan mode from Dragon Ball. Not only did this unleashing of immense power redefine all of Dragon Ball’s fights, but other anime brawls and characters as well.

That said, Super Saiyan isn’t the most powerful transformation to ever grace anime. While Super Saiyan grants Son Goku the untold strength of his ancestors, it pales in comparison with more powerful transformations and forms that can literally change the world around the user.

10 Hunter X Hunter – Gon’s Deadly Last Resort Against Neferpitou

Neferpitou Attacks An Adult Gon

Although still a pre-teen, Gon Freecss is a powerful and talented Nen user. As an adult, he’d be unstoppable and his Limitation Transformation shows exactly why. Besides a temporary grownup form with ludicrously tall hair, this technique instantly grants Gon all the Nen he would ever have in his life.

However, this comes at a steep price. After beating up Neferpitou, Gon falls into a coma, almost dies, loses the ability to see or use Nen, and cuts his lifespan down by a currently unknown amount of time. Gon only uses this technique once and is incredibly lucky to come out of it alive.

9 One Piece – Changing Gears Gives Luffy An Impressive Power Level

Luffy with a snarling expression as he expands into Gear Four

Monkey D. Luffy’s elastic powers that come from the Devil Fruit are strong enough, but this is just the beginning. To better his chances, Luffy trains to unlock his powers’ full potential. He has so far mastered four of these improvements, known as “Gears.”

Gear First includes the basic rubbery attacks, while Gear Fourth allows Luffy to shift between different body forms while using every fighting technique he learned earlier. Luffy’s Gears aren’t ranked higher because the legendary Gear Fifth has yet to be revealed. If Eiichiro Oda is to be believed, Gear Fifth will be the most powerful attack Luffy ever unleashes.

8 My Hero Academia – One For All Turned All Might Into Anime Superman

All Might Fights For Peace

All Might, the paragon of heroism in My Hero Academia, was the previous bearer of the powerful Quirk, One For All. With this ability, the lanky Toshinori Yagi turned into the impossibly strong All Might in a heartbeat. At the height of his power, All Might was the strongest hero in the world, protecting those living in Japan as well as other countries.

What really makes One For All so powerful is that it’s a generational Quirk — it’s passed from user to user and it grows in strength and capability with each new bearer. As the current wielder, Deku has yet to realize One For All’s full strength, given that he is still not able to get a transformation. That said, even the Quirk itself hasn’t hit its fullest potential; Deku will probably be the one to finally unleash it.

7 Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights In The Sky Are Stars – Kamina Is Resurrected As A Mecha God

The Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is born in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

The titular Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann isn’t just one of the most powerful mecha ever, but also one of the largest. In its full form, Gurren Lagann is big enough to use galaxies as throwing stars, but this is nothing in front of its ultimate transformation in the anime’s second movie.

After an initial defeat, Gurren Lagann splits into individual Gunmen that evolve into their own Gurren Laganns. Together, they form the Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which is likely bigger than the observable universe and strong enough to end the Spiral War on its own. Even better, it takes the form of an ethereal Kamina, giving him one of the most badass anime resurrections ever.

6  JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency – Kars Becomes A Perpetually Evolving God

Jojos Kars Become The Ultimate Life Form shining brightly

As the leader of the Pillar Men and the creator of the Stone Masks, Kars’ goal is to evolve into “The Ultimate Lifeform.” He accomplishes this shortly after his reawakening with a specialized mask, which turns him into a constantly evolving being that adapts to every possible situation.

Kars is so powerful that the only way to defeat him is not through traditional JoJo brawn, but wits. Ultimately, he is doomed by his own immortality when he’s launched into space, to float in vacuum for eternity. Though Kars’ godhood was embarrassingly short-lived, the sheer magnitude of his powers is something few anime villains and heroes can even dream of.

5 Berserk – Griffith Is Reborn A God, Twice

Femto & Griffith Reborn

With its monstrous Apostles, Berserk clearly has some of the most terrifying anime transformations ever seen. Case in point, Griffith: the leader of the mercenary army known as the Band of the Hawk. His first transformation takes place during the nightmarish Eclipse, where Griffith condemns his loyal soldiers to eternal damnation to be reborn as the fifth God Hand member, Femto.

Femto is reborn once more during the Incarnation Ceremony. Here, thousands are sacrificed to the darkness so that a revived Griffith can become a being that is part of both the supernatural and physical worlds. Using his newfound powers, Griffith creates his dream kingdom of Falconia, duping humans and Apostles alike into thinking he’s their hero, not their conqueror.

4 Attack On Titan – Eren Shifts Into The End Of The World

Attack on Titan Eren As The Founding Titan

As the Attack Titan, Eren can go one-on-one against both Pure Titans and other Shifters, like Reiner (the Armored Titan). However, Eren also has the Founding Titan in him, and ultimately uses its reality-bending powers to end the world.

Fueled by rage against a world that condemned his people to a fate worse than death, Eren activates the Rumbling, unleashing millions of Colossal Titans to literally trample civilization to death. As the Founding Titan, Eren transforms into a skeletal monstrosity too gigantic for human comprehension — fittingly, his final form lacks any of his previous life’s humanity.

3 Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance – Eva Unit-01 Achieves Godhood For One Wish

Eva Unit 01 Breaks Free

The second Rebuild of Evangelion movie ends with one of Shinji’s most impressive actions ever seen. To wit, he deliberately triggers the Third Impact to save Rei from Zeruel. As Ritsuko puts it, Eva Unit-01 breaks free of its physical restraints to become a literal god, all thanks to Shinji’s willpower and his love for Rei.

If not for Kaworu’s last-second intervention, Unit-01 would’ve ended both the world and reality as well. Contrast this to The End of Evangelion, where Eva Unit-01 starts the Third Impact against Shinji’s will.

2 Akira – Tetsuo Becomes A God & Transcends Existence

Tetsuo Gets Consumed By Akiras Power

After a series of lab experiments, Tetsuo awakens with immense psychic powers reminiscent of Akira, the child responsible for Tokyo’s destruction roughly a decade ago. Tetsuo’s powers begin increasing soon enough and he becomes Neo-Tokyo’s destructive god, killing more than half the city just by walking.

Because of how much power Tetsuo wields, his body collapses and absorbs whatever is around him to compensate. In the end, he becomes an unrecognizable mass of matter and gore which has to be transported to another reality just to keep the present safe. Akira ends with Tetsuo basically becoming his own universe, starting with a Big Bang.

1 Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Rebellion – Homura Embraces The Darkness & Rewrites Reality

Homura Embraces The Darkness

Like many magical girls before her, Homura falls into despair and becomes a Witch. Her Witch form, Homulilly, is just as powerful as the others, but what sets Homura apart is what happens next. Madoka and friends pull her back, but before Madoka can free Homura from her curse, the latter activates her Witch powers to create a new reality.

In Rebellion’s finale, Homura tears down the Law of Cycles, breaks Kyubey’s will to live, resurrects her dead friends, and brainwashes Madoka into the normal schoolgirl Homura loves. To balance Madoka as the ultimate good, Homura proclaims herself to be the evil (Devil Homura) that will always be by Madoka’s side – even if it means that they’ll inevitably fight one another.
