The Japanese word "Nichijou" can be translated to something like "every day", and that's what the anime Nichijou claims to be, a story about the everyday, ordinary life of various people. Of course, anybody who has actually seen the anime will know that it certainly isn't the case here. Featuring an interesting cast of characters who are each more eccentric than the other, the show doesn't even have much of a plot and is just a bunch of hilarious jokes and gags put together.

Nichijou's real charm lies in its silly and wacky humor and its absurdist style of animation which truly brings out the comedy to its full, awesome potential. Several other comedy anime exist out there, but few are as bizarrely funny.

10 Wasteful Days of High School Girls

All things considered, Wasteful Days of High School Girls is basically Nichijou with a slightly smaller cast and more "normal" animation and gags, but the hilarity is still there.

The main cast of female characters includes an aspiring manga author, a quiet natured girl, and an occasionally accoying goofball, quite similar to the trio found in Nichijou. The characters even have nicknames assigned to them, that describe their personality and traits such as "Baka" (stupid) and "Majo" (witch).

9 Lucky Star

People who like to have long unnecessary discussions for hours and hours on the most random of topics will feel right at home with Lucky Star. A significant portion of the first episode is spent debating which side of a chocolate puff should be eaten first and how to properly grill beef tongues, and the rest of the episodes aren't much different.

The practically non-existent plot follows the exploits of four high school girls with varying personalities: a lazy yet athletic and diligent otaku, two twin sisters, and the fourth, an intelligent and well-spoken girl.

8 Teasing Master Takagi-san

The romance in Nichijou is just as big of a joke as everything else, but Teasing Master Takagi-san takes it slightly more seriously, but the comedy is always refreshing and forever entertaining. The show's focus is almost always exclusively on the adorable chemistry between its core duo, unlike most comedy anime which usually revolve around groups of people.

The premise centers around middle-schooler Nishikata who spends his days getting teased by his classmate Takagi, and is unaware of the fact that she likes him.

7 Asobi Asobase: Workshop Of Fun

If there was a competition for having the most misleading anime opening, Asobi Asobase would be the champion. The opening shows the lead three female characters in frilly white dresses singing about flowers in a garden, while the ending sequence features the same characters performing a literal death metal song.

People who've seen the anime will know that the ending is more accurate at representing what the characters are like. In order to be able to play around to their heart's content, three highschool girls form an unofficial  "Pastime Club" whose only objective is to engage in whatever humourous "pastimes" they can think of.

6 Daily Lives of High School Boys

Daily Lives of High School Boys anime

A staggering percentage of all the comedy anime out there features an all-female or at least mostly female-centric cast. This is why Daily Lives of High School Boys is something of a rarity and in a league of its own making. Vastly similar to Nichijou in spirit, it follows the everyday antics of the students of the all-boys Sanada North High School.

Ranging from random romantic encounters by the riverside to trying out the bra of a friend's sister, there is no length these boys are not willing to go for the sake of fun.

5 Non Non Biyori

the cast of Non Non Biyori

Non Non Biroyi lands more on the side of a slice of life drama than comedy, but its tale about the cute residents of the countryside town of Asahigaoka and their day to day lives is one of the best wholesome comedies around.

Unlike Nichijou, whose depiction of what "everyday life" looks like is as detached from reality as possible, Non Non Biyori is a much more realistic story, but it's a delight nonetheless. City kid Hotaru Ichijou moves to the village from Tokyo, and along with her fellow classmates of various ages she tries to settle into the country life.

4 Paniponi Dash!

Paniponi Dash! is a difficult anime to summarize briefly, as mere words cannot describe the sheer insanity of it. An 11-year-old kid, Rebecca Miyamoto, who happens to be an MIT graduate and is being observed by aliens is employed as a homeroom teacher of a class full of weirdos in the Peach Moon Academy.

Filled with fourth wall breaks and more references and inside jokes than anyone can possibly keep up with, its fast-paced style of comedy is very much in line with Nichijou.

3 YuruYuri: Happy Go Lily

Yet another anime about high-school girls. If it hasn't been made abundantly clear already, a majority of comedy anime, good or otherwise, tend to follow this theme and setting. Taking place in an all-girls middle school, YuruYuri chronicles the high jinks of the members of the "Amusement Club" as they try to live their school lives to the fullest.

Akaza Akari is supposed to be the main character, but due to her lack of presence people fail to notice her at all, something her friends love to joke about.

2 Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga's Daioh, Ayumu, Sakaki, Chiyo, Kagura, and Tomo.

Like all great comedy anime, Azumanga Daioh's journey began as a four-panel comic strip, written by the same author who created one of the longest-running and highly acclaimed slice of life manga of all timeYotsuba.

A 10-year-old prodigy, Chiyo Mihama begins her early high-school life worrying whether she would fit in or not, only to discover that her classmates are equally if not more quirky. It's not only the students who are eccentric in nature but their homeroom teacher as well, who'd go as far as snatching way a student's cycle to avoid being late for school.

1 Plastic Elder Sister

Plastic Neesan

It is a debatable point whether or not Plastic Elder Sister can even be called an actual anime series in the first place, considering its entire 12-episode season is as long as an average anime episode. The humor, although different from Nichijou, in the sense that it is much crasser and explicit, is still amusing nonetheless.

At a length of only 2 minutes each, the episodes focus on Iroe "Nee-san" Genma and her fellow friends in the Model Club in a series of borderline vulgar and indecent gags.
