The anime medium has tons of superpowers for characters to wield. Some powers are strong, some are unique, and some are downright strange. While one would like to imagine how interesting or even fun it could be to have certain powers from their favorite anime, some of those powers come at a cost.

There are quite a few powers across anime that would be inconvenient for one reason or another. Whether it's because they have some unfortunate side-effects, could kill the user, or just make living life more of a nightmare, these powers are really just more like a curse.

10 The Legendary Weapons Are Quite Attached To Their Heroes (The Rising Of The Shield Hero)

Naofumi's Shield, The Rising of the Shield Hero

On one hand, having a magical weapon like the Cardinal Weapons from The Rising of the Shield Hero that's capable of many things and always at your side sounds like it would be great. Sadly, these legendary weapons come with their own baggage.

For starters, the weapon's chosen hero can never remove their weapon from their person. Then, there's the fact that they also prevent using another weapon of any kind. If those weren't bad enough, the Curse Series of forms can be unlocked only if the hero is driven to the edge enough, and it can take them over if they're not careful.

9 Sugar Rush Is Reliant On Sweets (My Hero Academia)

Sato's Sugar Rush

In all fairness, there are quite a few Quirks in My Hero Academia's world that have drawbacks, but Rikido Sato's Quirk "Sugar Rush" might be one of the more difficult ones to deal with. Sugar Rush gives Sato super strength, but the requirement is that he needs to consume large quantities of sugar to make it work.

While this doesn't seem so bad at first, it only works for three minutes for every ten grams of sugar eaten, and its usage causes slight hypoglycemia. Also, the number of sweets one would have to go through just to keep the Quirk active might be a bit pricey after a while, which is why Sato had to learn how to bake.

8 Stand Users Are Always In Danger (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Stands

The characters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure have had many strange powers, though the most popular is Stands. While it would be interesting to have a spirit always willing to be called on and fight for its user, there are downsides to having a Stand.

Stands themselves can be a bit of a gamble, some having weird but extraordinary power, while others aren't really meant for fighting and aren't the most useful. On top of that Stand Users are always drawn to each other, so, depending on the situation, a Stand User's life is almost always in danger somehow.

7 The Unfortunate Drawbacks To Being A Titan (Attack On Titan)

Attack on Titan — Wall Rose

The Titans from Attack on Titan have extraordinary destructive power to match their extraordinary size. While the more mindless ones are more common, there are humans who can transform into one of the Nine Titans. However, being a Titan Shifter comes at a cost.

Firstly, anyone who becomes a Titan Shifter shortens their remaining lifespan to thirteen years. In order to gain the powers, one must first be transformed into a mindless Titan and eat the previous inheritor of the Nine Titans. The price to go from man to monster may be too much for some to pay.

6 The Mangekyo Sharingan Requires Sacrifices (Naruto)

The ninja world of Naruto has seen many people who are born with unique powers known as Kekkei Genkai, techniques and abilities passed down through blood. One of these includes the Uchiha clan's Sharingan, which allows for the user to see chakra and mimic movements and even Jutsu. The Sharingan can be further evolved into the Mangekyo Sharingan, though it comes with a great burden.

In order to obtain it, the user has to experience the trauma of watching the death of someone they're close to. That alone would be horrible, but, to make matters worse, the power eventually leads to worsening eyesight and even blindness the more it's used.

5 Cursed Speech Makes Life A Lot Harder (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Toge Inumaki _ Cursed Speech

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Cursed Energy and Cursed Technique grant Jujutsu Sorcerers powers that normal humans could only dream of. However, some powers are easier to live with than others. One such case is Toge Inumaki's Cursed Speech which turns his words into reality for anyone that hears him. The only problem with this is that it also affects his normal speech too.

Since Cursed Speech is pretty much always active, it forces the user to limit their speech in order to not use it on those they don't mean to, like how Inumaki's vocabulary consists only of riceball ingredients. On top of that, overusing this ability can wreak havoc on the user's throat and might even make them unable to speak at all.

4 Being A Ghoul Isn't Easy (Tokyo Ghoul)

The ghouls from Tokyo Ghoul are far stronger than the average human and far more durable. While that's all well and good, the simple fact is that the life of a ghoul can be a hard one. Becoming a ghoul means shedding one's humanity one way or another, and making compromises in order to survive.

Ghouls also can't eat normal food, as their diet consists of humans and, sometimes, other ghouls. While there are alternatives, they're known for tasting disgusting. The lifestyle of a ghoul isn't all too glamorous either, being forced to either try to co-exist with human society or just living in solitude all while being caught in the middle of human and ghoul politics that make living even harder.

3 Devil Fruit Grants Power At The Cost Of Being Able To Swim (One Piece)

devil fruit

The easiest and most well-known way to gain superpowers in the world of One Piece would be to eat a Devil Fruit. While it may taste awful, eating one will grant abilities like transforming into an animal or commanding the elements. While many in this anime end up eating these strange fruits, they all end up losing something in return.

Eating a Devil Fruit will result in that person essentially being cursed by the sea and losing the ability to swim, sinking like a rock after touching the water. On top of that, there's no guarantee that the Devil Fruit that's eaten will give someone a good power.

2 Return By Death Could Drive Anyone To The Brink Of Madness (Re:Zero)

Subaru Kills Himself To Restart And Save Rem In Re: Zero Anime

Many heroes in isekai anime have their own unique powers, some of which are nothing short of overpowered and make the hero's lives easy. Re:Zero's Return by Death is anything but. This ability does exactly what the name implies, reviving whoever has it back to a certain point in the past whenever they die, and that's about the only benefit it has.

This power can grant someone like Subaru the experience to tackle a problem multiple times but is not an easy burden to bear. Dying in many gruesome ways would drive most to lose one's mind in time. To make it worse, the one who has Return by Death is unable to tell anyone about it, resulting in great pain or something worse if they try to.

1 Having Psychic Powers Takes The Excitement Out Of Life (The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K)

Nendou's father ghost coming from inside the TV during The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

At first, being the ultimate psychic sounds amazing - being able to always read people's thoughts, know basically everything, and have pretty much every power under the sun. It may sound like it would make for a great life, but Kusuo Saiki from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K would say otherwise.

With Saiki's powers, one would be able to see the flaws in just about everyone as they read their thoughts as well as be unable to avoid spoilers for shows, books, or movies. The additional abilities also make things not only unchallenging but boring too. In short, being a psychic like Saiki sounds cool, but takes the excitement out of life.
