Fans raised by the world of Harry Potter have a real soft spot for magical schools, having daydreamed about attending one themselves. Though Hogwarts might not feel like the safe place it once was, the heart of the place remains alluring. School might be dull, but learning magic wouldn't be.

Magic plays a mighty role in fantasy anime, but many witches, wizards, and sorcerers learn their magic on the road or on their own. Even so, plenty of shows combined magic and slice-of-life schools aspects.

9 First High Magic High School (Irregular at Magic High School)

first high magic school building

First High School is located in a futuristic version of Hachijo, Tokyo, and educates hundreds of Magicians. While the school is unfairly divided into low achieving students (Weeds) and high achieving students (Blooms), anyone who hopes to attend First High must face a difficult vetting and examination process.

In The Irregular At Magic High School, protagonist Shiba Tatsuya is placed in the Weeds group, which specializes less in magic but proves more adept in technology and combat. Unfortunately, Weeds aren't given actual professors but attend computer-taught lessons instead. A fundamental difference between the Mahouka Kokou universe and the Harry Potter universe is the incorporation of technology, as powerful magicians can become a military asset to a nation.

8 Alzano Imperial Magic Academy (Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi To Akashic Records)

alzano imperial magic academy

Located somewhere in the fictional region of Fejite, Alano Imperial Magic Academy is the highest institution of magic education in Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records. Paid for by the nation itself, the academy trains 1800 young mages at any given time, some of whom live onsite in dorms.

Unlike most magical school series, a professor, rather than a student, serves as the protagonist. Glenn Radars is a questionable professor at best, though not nearly as awful as Snape or Umbridge. When push comes to shove, Glenn has his students' best interests at heart.

7 Royal Biblia Academy (Trinity Seven)

Like Hogwarts, the Royal Biblia Academy of Trinity Seven is kept largely secret from wider society. Funded by international governments, the school serves two purposes: training new mages and utilizing those mages to investigate magical mysteries the world over. Unlike most schools, students can even be paid when they complete their missions, though students have to purchase most of their own equipment and magical supplies. The student population is mostly female, with a few exceptions.

6 Death Weapon Meister Academy (Soul Eater)

While the magic system in Soul Eater is rather specific, it does seem like a lively school to attend. The students, budding meisters, learn how to capture errant souls and thus maintain order in society.

Founded by Death himself, the school aims to educate students while also preventing the uprising of another kishin, a monster composed of souls. Located in Death City and boasting lots of spooky Halloween-themed decor, Death Weapon Meister Academy maintains a playful image even as it contends with dangerous witches and monsters.

5 Tristanian Academy Of Magic (The Familiar of Zero)

familiar of zero school, the tristain academy of magic

Tristanian Academy of Magic is shaped like a pentagon, perhaps in reference to the pentacle used in magic or the disciplines of magic the school offers. Though primarily attended by the children of aristocrats who aspire to become mages, Tristanian Academy offers five elemental magic courses of study. Students can study earth, fire, water, wind, or void.

Mages who master one element can also study another, meaning that the sky's the limit when it comes to learning new kinds of magic. Those who want to study void magic might have trouble, however, as this ancient sorcery is incredibly rare and few instructors are capable of teaching it.

4 Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College (Jujutsu Kaisen)

There aren't many students in attendance at Tokyo Jujtusu High, but that's one of the school's many charms. Unlike witches and wizards in Harry Potter, potential jujutsu sorcerors are in short supply in Jujutsu Kaisen, which is one reason educating them is so vital. The first and second years at Jujutsu High are on very friendly terms and are more like family than classmates.

Best of all, the school's overseen by anime-fan-favorite Satoru Gojo, whose somewhat unprofessional demeanor makes him approachable to students. Jujutsu High is disguised as a Buddhist temple and maintains a rivalry with Kyoto Prefectural Jujutsu High School.

3 True Cross Academy (Blue Exorcist)

Those seeking a magical school that looks a lot like Howl's eponymous moving castle should look no further than True Cross Academy of Blue Exorcist. True Cross welcomes students of all kinds, including the son of Satan himself. Headmaster Mephisto Pheles is clearly a demon himself, and even as he's scheming, he seems intent on protecting his students. The magic system in Blue Exorcist effectively combines Western witchcraft with elements of Japanese Shinto folklore. Best of all, the school hides in plain sight as a private school for the wealthy while secretly training exorcists underneath it all.

2 Ranoa Magic University (Mushoku Tensei)

Rudeus Greyrat and his friends laugh in the fields in Mushoku Tensei.

One of the most recent anime to incorporate a magic school is Mushoku Tensei. Located in the fictional city of Sharia, Ranoa Magic University is the world's largest magical school and has more than 10,000 students in attendance. Students from all tribes, species, and guilds are welcome, which puts it a step above Hogwarts, which offers admittance only to humans from the UK.

Students do have to pay an entrance fee, but the school was built from protective magical bricks and there are fixtures on sight that can heal injuries, too. In addition to learning magic, students can study swordsmanship and horseriding.

1 Luna Nova Magical Academy (Little Witch Academia)

little witch academia school, luna nova

The creators of Little Witch Academia clearly read Harry Potter, watched Worst Witch, and threw in some Miyazaki during the planning process. Given all this, it's no surprise that Luna Nova seems like such a whimsical, wonderful place to study. Located on a powerful leyline, Luna Nova has a long history of educating witches. However, in the beginning, it only invited students from magical families. Over time, Luna Nova became an institution that welcomes students from all circumstances and from all around the world, proof that the school can get with the times. The one caveat? Girls only.

Students at Luna Nova study a wide range of subjects, including basics like Flying, White Magic, and Magical Linguistics, as well as more nuanced topics like Bird Language, Alchemy, and Culinary Magic. The school is also home to clubs and magical creatures. There's truly not much the school can't offer its students.
