Falling in love is a magical thing, but that doesn't mean all confessions are magical. While some can act as a show of pure love, others can come out wrong or be said in the wrong environment. Over the years, there have been a lot of romance anime that has given us heart-wrenching declarations of love that made us grab our tissue boxes or reach for our loved ones.
Then there were the ones where we wanted to shut off our televisions out of awkwardness. This list is going to go over the five best declarations of love in anime and five that made us cringe.
10 MADE US CRINGE: HIDEKI CONFESSING TO AKO (AND YOU THOUGHT THERE WAS NEVER A GIRL ONLINE?)
Hideki Nishimura, or more widely known by his online name Rusian, distrusted girl characters after being rejected by a player who was a guy in real life. So when his in-game wife in Legendary Age turns out to be a girl who attends the same school as him.
After falling in love with Ako in real life after speaking more, Hideki decides to confess after a push from the other members within his guild. Unfortunately for Hideki, Ako can't distinguish between the game and real life, so when he asks her to go out with him, her answer is a cruel: no.
9 BEST: SAKUTA DECLARES HIS LOVE FOR MAI (RASCAL DOES NOT DREAM OF BUNNY GIRL SENPAI)
This confession comes from Sakuta Azusagawa from Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai.After meeting Mai Sakurajima and discovering she has Adolescence Syndrome, in this case, she is unable to be seen by others who forget about her, he attempts to help her recover from it.
After forgetting her because of it, he remembers before running to the school ground and shouting that "he loves Mai Sakurajima very much" repeatedly until she's remembered by everyone. Although he received a slap in response to the embarrassing moment, the two end up as a couple in the end and throughout the rest of the anime.
8 MADE US CRINGE: MITSUO CONFESSING TO CHINAMI (GOLDEN TIME)
This was a rejection so traumatic the character who confessed dyed his hair blond. Not romantically interested in his childhood friend, Koko Koga, Mitsuo repeatedly rejects her advances. Mitsuo quickly becomes interested in Chinami Oka, a girl he met in the Film Club.
After being invited to a dinner organized by Chika, Koko provokes Mitsuo by telling him he won't ever be able to confess to Chika. After immediately confessed to Chika however, she says something worse than a simple no or even an apology. She asks him if he's stupid (with a smile, no less) and it promptly ends their conversation.
7 BEST: TERESA CONFESSES TO MITSUYOSHI (TADA-KUN NEVER FALLS IN LOVE)
This may be a romantic comedy, but the romance shines in the latter half. It tells the love story of Tada Mitsuyoshi and Teresa Wagner. We're told the reason why Tada doesn't enjoy dealing with romance is that he lost his parents at a young age and doesn't wish to be attached to anyone.
That all changes when he begins to fall for Teresa, the future Queen of Larsenburg. What we don't know is that Teresa loves him too until the last episode where we're led to believe Tada confessed his feelings, was rejected, and they went their separate ways. After the credits, its shown Teresa was the one to confess and she stays in Japan together with Tada.
6 MADE US CRINGE: RYOUMA CONFESSES TO IZUMI (LOVE STAGE!!)
The problem with this confession isn't the confession itself, but the reaction. The entire plot is filled with awkwardness (at least in the first couple of episodes) so this shouldn't be a surprise to many who know of the infamous confession scene. Ryouma Ichijou fell in love with Izumi Sena after co-starring with him in a wedding commercial when they were children, but what he didn't know was that Izumi was a boy.
Granted, Izumi dresses as a girl, but that's not the problem. The problem is that when Ryouma confesses to him and discovers he's a boy, he acts disgusted to even have thought about him like that.
5 BEST: YUZURU CONFESSING TO KANADE (ANGEL BEATS)
After all of the students pass on from the afterlife by resolving their regrets, it only leaves Yuzuru and Kanade. Yuzuru takes this moment to confess that he has fallen in love with her and wishes to remain in the afterlife together and help other lost souls move on.
While Kanade is happy about his feelings, she tells him she regretted that she was never able to thank her donor, Yuzuru, for giving up his heart to prolong her life a little longer. As she thanks him she disappears, leaving Yuzuru to tell her not to go and repeatedly telling her he loves her.
4 MADE US CRINGE: SAKURA "CONFESSING" TO NARUTO (NARUTO SHIPPUDEN)
Here's a notorious confession from Sakura Haruno. The thought of this confession makes many Naruto fans cringe to this day. When Sasuke became a criminal to Konoha, Sakura thinks the only way to stop Naruto from finding and bringing him back is to tell him she loves him.
We all know all the only person Sakura has ever loved since childhood has been Sasuke. Even Naruto knows that, so when he hears her words, he sees through her lies. The confession itself is a cruel way to play with his feelings because she knows he had a crush on her since she was a child.
3 BEST: HINATA CONFESSING TO NARUTO (NARUTO SHIPPUDEN)
On the flip side, here's a confession a lot of people accepted from Hinata Hyuga. During Pain's assault, she sees Naruto pinned down with her Byakugan and rushes to him. Despite Pain being stronger than her, she doesn't back down and begins to fight him, getting thrown around in the process.
When Naruto asks her why she's doing this, she confesses that she loves him as well as the reasons. It stands as one of the most admirable and sad confessions in shounen, with Hinata suggested being dead after Pain stabs her while she's down, still trying to help Naruto.
2 MADE US CRINGE: RISA CONFESSING TO ATSUSHI (LOVELY COMPLEX)
Risa Koizumi is a tall girl while Atsushi Otani is a small boy. They butt heads throughout the series, but Risa is ultimately the first to fall in love with Atsushi as well as confess her feelings to him. Risa becomes emotional when it comes to her feelings, so she grabs his arm and tells him she's in love with him.
When she tells Atsushi repeatedly she loves him, he shouts back that he understands so she can stop saying it. Unbeknownst to Risa, her confession was broadcast to a stadium full of people, which will live on as an embarrassing memory for the rest of her life.
1 BEST: REM CONFESSING TO SUBARU (RE:ZERO)
The 1# spot goes to Rem from Re:Zero that began the infamous "I love Emila" memes. Before her rejection, Rem confesses that she loves Subaru. She even goes into detail about every part she loves about him and the reasons behind them. But even after she shows how much she cares for him and will do anything to be in his life, Subaru shoots her down by telling her he loves Emilia. Despite knowing that, Rem still doesn't give up and tells him that even if he doesn't love her, her greatest wish is to stay by his side.
