Hellsing is the tale of a secretive organization that works to wipe the world clean off of vampires. The series is iconic within the anime community, due in large part to its two fantastic leads: Alucard and Seras Victoria. Alucard is a powerful vampire whose favorite weapon is a handgun, while Seras Victoria runs Hellsing, which was previously her father's organization.

The Hellsing franchise is arguably the most well-known anime in the entire vampire genre, so it's only natural for fans to use it as a springboard to find similar series. Whether they be part of the horror, action, or thriller genres, there are plenty of anime shows for fans of Hellsing to sink their teeth into.

Updated on June 8, 2023 by Kennedy King: The Hellsing franchise has been dormant for over a decade, but with each passing year, new anime emerge as worthy spiritual successors. As a result, it should be easy for fans of Alucard and his gun-slinging adventures to find series that strike the same chords.

10 Devilman Crybaby (2018)

Devilman Crybaby follows the story of Akira Fudou, a gullible high school student living with his longtime crush and her family. Ryo, an acquaintance of Akira's from school, takes him to an underground nightclub, only for a host of demons to break loose and descend on the partygoers. Unable to fend for himself or his friend, Akira joins with devil Amon and becomes the creature known as Devilman.

Still a crybaby at heart but now combined with a powerful devil, Akira works to save humanity from the demons that stole his innocence in the first place. Although certainly a different tone than Hellsing, Devilman Crybaby's violent presentation and heavy subject matter bear many similarities.

9 Drifters (2016)

Drifters' main character, a member of the rearguard named Toyohisa Shimazu, is mortally wounded in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Moments before his death, he's pulled into a hallway by a man named Murasaki and transported to a strange, fantastical realm embroiled in a similar conflict.

Toyohisa is recruited into the Drifters, an organization looking to fight against the villain group, the Ends, for the freedom of all living things. Like Hellsing, Drifters' narrative follows a war between two opposing factions with a deep history of conflict — an unsurprising correlation, given the fact that both series share the same author.

8 Trigun (1998)

Vash the Stampede, otherwise known as the Humanoid Typhoon, is a traveling outlaw with a bounty of 60 billion double dollars on his head. He serves as the protagonist of Trigun, and despite his best efforts, bounty hunters and assassins constantly try to cash in on his head.

Trigun follows Vash's journey as he travels the planet of Gunsmoke with two insurance agents, Meryl and Milly, that do their best to negate the financial effects of his actions. Throughout the series, his backstory becomes progressively more clear, setting up a series of conflicts with his closest family member.

7 Claymore (2007)

Claymore is quite similar to Hellsing in the sense that demon extermination lies at the heart of both. The series tells the story of Clare, a woman who hunts down flesh-eating demons known as youma. However, unlike the civilians that she's saving, Clare is one-quarter-youma, giving her access to a host of powers that normal humans would be incapable of wielding.

As Claymore's story progresses, Clare befriends Raki, a young boy attempting to save his village from the threat of youma. The two eventually develop a bond that helps Clare rediscover her humanity, reminding her that youma genetics aren't the only thing that defines her.

6 Blade (2011)

Blade follows the story of a man by the same name. Created by Marvel Comics, Blade is a Daywalker — a living being that is equal parts human and vampire. He was born with this abnormality because a vampire attacked his mother when she was pregnant with him.

The Blade anime tells Blade's classic revenge story, focusing on his daily hunt to find the vampire that attacked his mother. His parallel to Hellsing's Alucard should be clear, but if it's not, then his ruthless execution of vampire hordes will certainly connect the dots.

5 Black Lagoon (2006)

Black Lagoon lacks Hellsing's supernatural twist, but with its violence, gunfights, and gore, they clearly share some common ground. The series follows the story of ordinary businessman Rokurou Okajima after his life is flipped upside down by a mercenary group known as Black Lagoon.

Black Lagoon's members come from around the globe; however, each of them brings a unique set of skills to their line of work. Rokurou — referred to as "Rock" after he grows closer to the members of Black Lagoon — might not be able to take down vampires, but his skills against rival mercenaries and pirates are impressive by the end of the series.

4 Blood+ (2005)

Blood+, as its name suggests, deals with a lot of gore, violence, and death — much like the beloved Hellsing series. Set in a world under attack by bat-like creatures, Blood+ follows Otonashi Saya, an anemic schoolgirl in modern-day Japan, as she slowly realizes that she is the sole hoping of saving Earth.

Blood+'s bat-like creatures are effectively an alternative take on vampires, creating an immediate throughline between the series and Hellsing. Its similarly grim setting and historical world-building are only further evidence of the similarities between teh two brutal anime.

3 Trinity Blood (2005)

Trinity Blood is set in a world destroyed by Armageddon. Despite its post-apocalyptic status, the world is still split by an ongoing fight between vampires and humans that causes further destruction. The Vatican Church is seen as the only protector of humans, but it has to rely on its allies from time to time.

The protagonist Trinity Blood, Abel Nightroad, is one of the priests from the Vatican committed to fighting vampires. However, he's significantly different from his human peers — Abel is a Crusnik, a vampire who feasts on the blood of other vampires. Alucard of Hellsing functions in much the same way, and while he may be a slightly better character than Abel, Trinity Blood makes up for it in plenty of other ways.

2 Devil May Cry (2007)

The Devil May Cry anime is based on a video game series of the same name. This show tells the story of Dante, a man who is part human and part demon. However, despite his demonic nature, he works as a devil hunter and regularly pursues demons in hopes of finding revenge for the death of his mother.

Dante owns and leads the Devil May Cry organization, which also seeks to exterminate demons that are a nuisance or threat to human society. Aided by two guns, Ebony and Ivory, and a host of demonic powers, Dante's extermination mission pits him against a variety of enemies that naturally draw comparisons to those in Hellsing.

1 Black Butler (2008)

Black Butler is a dark tale about what happens when one sells their soul to seek revenge. The show's protagonist, a young boy named Ciel Phantomhive, is known as "the Queen's Guard Dog". Ciel keeps Her Majesty's empire stable and is aided in his efforts by his butler, Sebastian Michaelis.

As a young boy, Ciel loses everyone precious to him, so in an effort to exact revenge, he sells his soul to the devil. Although it comes at great cost, the agreement grants Ciel the powers that he needs to find the murderer of his parents, setting him on a quest for revenge that draws natural comparisons to Hellsing's Alucard.
