There are many jokes made in anime to spice up a scene or break the dramatic tension for viewers. However, sometimes these jokes can backfire and ultimately ruin the scene for viewers.

Some jokes can end up creating controversial moments rather than being funny, such as in Love Lab. Other jokes can ruin potentially romantic scenes, such as Maika falling asleep right before Dino confessed his love to her in Blend S. Though some of these scenes tried inserting jokes for the sake of humor or breaking up dramatic tension, most viewers agree that the scenes would be better if they had no jokes at all.

10 Natsuo Dressing Up As A "Soul Sister" Gave Way To Controversy (Love Lab)

Riko and Natsuo from Love Lab

During one discussion between the members of the Love Lab about trying to charm boys they liked, Natsuo suggested dressing up as a "soul sister" to get their attention. This resulted in her briefly dressing up with bleached hair, exaggerated facial features, and noticeably tanned skin.

Many viewers immediately called out the joke as using blackface for humor, while others interpreted it as Natsuo wearing something similar to the ganguro fashion style, which includes people tanning their skin and wearing exaggerated makeup to contrast it. Either way, the joke did not sit well with fans and became a point of controversy in the series, especially since Natsuo never did this again later on.

9 Maika Was Asleep During Dino's Love Confession (Blend S)

During a skiing trip that Maika and her coworkers went on together, Dino hoped to finally confess his love to Maika. While the two of them warmed up from the cold weather outside, Dino decided to confess to Maika that he loved her, much to their coworkers' joy.

Unfortunately for Dino and everyone watching, they realized too late that Maika had fallen asleep right before Dino's love confession. Not only did this ruin Dino's love confession, but it also ruined a potentially romantic moment between him and Maika.

8 Naoya Running After Nagisa In The Finale Was More Melodramatic Than Hilarious (Girlfriend, Girlfriend)

Nagisa kisses Naoya in Girlfriend, Girlfriend.

During the finale of Girlfriend, Girlfriend, Nagisa tried to break things off with Naoya and Saki for good and argued that Saki's happiness was more important than hers. However, Naoya and the rest of the main cast ran after Nagisa, with Naoya trying to tell her that he still loved her and that her happiness was just as important as Saki's.

Even though the series had its extreme moments, some viewers felt that this scene overdid the drama involved in Naoya trying to save his relationship with Nagisa. It cheapened the potentially-heartwarming moment Naoya and Nagisa could have with each other, even if it did bring a satisfactory end to the weird anime series.

7 Clear Led Aoba To The Wrong Tower (DRAMAtical Murder)

clear dramatical murder

During DRAMAtical Murder's anime adaptation, Clear tried helping Aoba, and his companions find Oval Tower. Though Clear believed that he had a clue vital for finding the location, he accidentally led them to "Overr Tower" instead.

It did not help that the foreshadowing leading to this scene was hyped up with intense curiosity, wonder, and awe about hopefully confronting the main villains soon, only for it to be turned into a joke. Thankfully for viewers, the main cast did eventually find the real Oval Tower later on.

6 All The Romantic Rivals Tried Separating Geordo And Catarina During A Private Moment (My Next Life As A Villainess)

When Geordo confronted Catarina Claes during a private moment and tried confessing his love to her, he also clarified that the kiss he gave her the episode before was real. However, just as the scene started becoming a touching romantic moment between them, all the other romantic interests burst into the scene and promptly tried separating Geordo from Catarina.

Catarina even pinched herself to clarify if the situation was real. Though the scene was amusing, it also ruined a potential romantic advance for Geordo, frustrating him and viewers rooting for him and Catarina to get together.

5 Azuma Accidentally Put A Ring On The Wrong Finger (Yakitate!! Japan)

Azuma Kazuma and Tsukino Azusagawa from Yakitate!! Japan

Just after Team Japan won the Monaco Cup to get funds to save Pantasia, they quickly discovered that the owner of St. Pierre, Pantasia's rival bakery, had already bought up most of Pantasia's stock and was effectively the new owner. Tsukino, one of the granddaughters that could potentially inherit Pantasia, was devastated.

Azuma tried to cheer her up by giving her a ring he got in an earlier episode and putting it on her finger. However, what ruined this touching scene was that he put it on her engagement ring finger without realizing it, flustering Tsukino.

4 Ren Gave Kyoko A Penalty Stamp Because She Thought About Her Rival (Skip Beat!)

Kyoko crushing Sho Fuwa In Her Hands as Ren stands next to her

During one episode of the shojo anime Skip Beat!, Kyoko collapsed while acting during a tea ceremony scene, resulting in her not getting the lead role from Ruriko. However, it was later revealed in the same episode that the director simply used Kyoko to motivate Ruriko to have a better work ethic.

Ren, who was the co-star in the film, noticed that Kyoko was upset after finding out that she did not get the role. However, he was upset when Kyoko confessed that she was thinking about her rival and archnemesis Sho at the time, rather than her being upset about losing the role to Ruriko. This resulted in Ren giving her a penalty stamp, turning what could be a moment of comfort into a joke at Kyoko's expense.

3 Kokoro Had To Save Yuuki From His First Fight (Princess Connect! Re: Dive)

When Kokoro and Yuuki first met in Princess Connect! Re: Dive, they also encountered wolves at the same time. Kokoro tried to teach Yuuki how to fight properly since Yuuki had amnesia and would not remember how to fight at the time. Unfortunately for Yuuki, the wolves immediately beat him, and Kokoro had no choice but to save him.

Though this joke was a realistic take on what it would be like to have amnesia and forget how to fight, some viewers felt that it ruined what could be a fun bonding moment of teamwork and camaraderie between Kokoro and Yuuki.

2 Raul Was Forced To Save Fino From A Machine Sprouting Tentacles (I Couldn't Become A Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided To Get A Job)

Fino Bloodstone smiling and laughing

It is not uncommon for the staff at Leon Magic Shop to deal with magical items gone haywire. However, some viewers thought one of these related incidents went too far when Fino inspected a machine that sprouted tentacles after she used too much magic.

The tentacles picked up Fino and assaulted her in ways that terrified not just her and her coworkers, but also everyone else watching the scene. Thankfully for Fino and viewers, a similar scene never occurred again, and they were spared from seeing more tentacle-like assaults, even if it was supposed to be a joke.

1 The Overreactions To Eating Imitation Pork Roast Turned Off Some Viewers (Food Wars!)

Gotcha Pork Roast, Food Wars

Food Wars! is now well-known for the characters having exaggerated, fanservice-centric reactions to eating delicious dishes. However, the reactions presented in the premiere episode confused many viewers watching or turned them off from watching more episodes when it first aired.

Yaeko tried to demolish Soma's family restaurant, but Soma made her an imitation pork roast dish. Soma made Yaeko promise that she would leave the restaurant alone if she was satisfied with the dish. Yaeko and her associates had an extreme reaction to eating it and made strange faces. Some viewers thought that the extreme reactions were a bit too extreme and stopped watching the show from then on. However, many other fans enjoyed it, and the show ran for five seasons filled with even more extreme reactions.
