The only thing better than watching a favorite anime is getting to dig into a new one. The Fall 2019 line-up does not seem set to disappoint the anime community on this front. There’s tons of new content that’s already out and coming out soon, from brand new seasons, fresh characters and stories, to various reboots and reimaginings of the old classics.
What a time to be alive for an otaku! But which ones are really worth watching? Which ones can live up to or even surpass the classics? Here are 10 Fall 2019 anime that are guaranteed to impress. Along with upcoming shows, Summer 2019 anime set to continue into the next season will also be considered.
10 Beastars
Move over Zootopia! Beastars is an upcoming anime being released in October and is set in a world full of anthropomorphic animals. The focus is on a high school that hosts herbivore and carnivorous students, with a large, timid gray wolf named Legoshi being the titular character.
When an Alpaca student is brutally murdered and eaten, distrust permeates the school, setting the stage for drama and conflict. However, amidst this tense atmosphere, Legoshi meets a rabbit named Haru and begins falling for her. With the beautiful art of the manga as a foundation, we can look forward to some gorgeous animation.
9 Sword Art Online: Alicization - War Of Underworld
The official Sword Art Online Twitter account announced that Alicization will continue with a second part entitled War of Underworld. It will cover a significant portion of the light novels. Strangely enough, in the overall franchise, War of the Underworld will still be considered as part of the third season!
Sword Art Online’s third season has officially become the longest in the series, lasting four cours, or 48 episodes, in total. The first half was wrapped up earlier this year, and the second will begin this October. Alicization concluded on an intriguing hook that fans are excited to see picked back up and thoroughly explored.
8 Radiant (Season 2)
Radiant is a fun, colorful anime that follows the protagonist Seth on his journey to becoming a powerful monster-slaying sorcerer. It’s based on the French manga by Tony Valente and Season 2 will span two cours and comprise twenty-one episodes, just like its predecessor.
Seth and his co-characters will be heading to new locations filled with all sorts of unique obstacles, some without and some within; in particular, Seth has to contend with supernatural visions entering his mind daily. There will also be the introduction of new characters. Radiant's 2nd season will debut on October 2, 2019.
7 Chihayafuru 3
Chihayafuru introduces an unsuspecting audience to an old but rigorous Japanese card game called Karuta. It’s not only mentally demanding but physically challenging, and the main character, Chihaya Ayase, is a strong-willed tomboyish girl who takes to the game like a fish to water; actually, more like a shark!
The series follows her progress in the sport-like game and has captured the interest of many anime viewers. It was pushed back from its April release and rescheduled to air on Nippon TV in October. Fans are excited to see just how far Chihaya can go in her Karuta career, along with the continuing development of the central love triangle that remains ever-present in the story.
6 The Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath Of The Gods
The Seven Deadly Sins made a big splash with its first two full-length seasons, therefore it comes as no surprise that the third is highly anticipated, especially since it looks set to be relatively substantial.
The anime's premise centers around Princess Elizabeth, who seeks the help of a group of disbanded knights called The Seven Deadly Sins when the Kingdom of Liones' Holy Knights stage a coup. Taking place after the events of Revival of The Commandments, Liones is still in the middle of a war against the Demon Clan, with the previous season revealing Meliodas' rather dark past. Tune in to see what happens in Fall 2019!
5 Fire Force
Fahrenheit 451, is that you? Set in an undetermined future ravaged by global warming, a young man is a third-generation pyrokinetic with the ability to ignite his feet at will. He joins the “Special Fire Force,” a task force with the responsibility of finding and putting out “Infernals”: Cases of spontaneous human combustion where a person becomes a living inferno.
Sound weird? It kind of is, but that’s what makes Fire Force great. This series premiered in July and will continue into the Fall 2019 season. Fire Force is also part of Toonami’s after-hour lineup on Adult Swim. Don’t stay up too late, kids.
4 No Guns Life
Premiering in October, No Guns Life is an action sci-fi anime created by Madhouse and geared toward young adults. Set in a post-war world, it follows the story of Inui Juuzou, a man with a gun for a face. The war called for several people to modify themselves into dangerous human weapons called the Extended, and Inui was no exception.
The protagonist has no memory of his past, and oddly enough, his face-gun is designed so that only someone behind him can pull the trigger. Assisted by a young girl called Mary, Inui investigates Extended cases while trying to learn about his past.
3 Dr. Stone
Dr. Stone is guaranteed to wow viewers with its unique storyline and cool, pseudo technology. In a post-apocalyptic future, a young man named Senku wakes up from the effects of a phenomenon that turned every human being into stone and finds the world reverted back to the stone age.
As one would expect, without modern technology, human beings are no longer at the top of the food chain. With his genius intellect, Senku sets out on a mission to reinvent every major human invention with whatever he has available to him. Exciting stuff. Dr. Stone debuted in the Summer 2019 line-up, so there are already a ton of episodes to watch prior to the Fall 2019 season.
2 Psycho-Pass 3
Much like the ‘thought crimes’ of George Orwell’s novel 1984, the world of Psycho-Pass lets no one who harbors even the slightest ill-will get away with it. In the 22nd century, Japan uses a method called the Sibyl System to catch people before they commit a crime (think Minority Report) making even thoughts and certain feelings illegal.
Of course, as is the case with most laws instituted by dystopian governments, not everything is what it seems. Psycho-Pass has been praised for tackling deep sociopolitical themes, even if the second season left something to be desired.
1 My Hero Academia (Season 4)
Season 3 of My Hero Academia left viewers hanging at the edge of a cliff-hanger. With Midoriya discovering a newfound control over his powers and being mentored by The Big Three, a lot of expectations have been placed on our hero by those eager to see Deku rise to the top.
The previous season's producing company, Studio Bones, will remain in charge, so fans can look forward to the same stellar quality in the fight scenes. The fourth season will debut on October 12, 2019.
