Hunter X Hunter's Gon Freecss and Killua Zoldyck are a killer duo. They've been pretty much inseparable after they met during the first phase of the Hunter Exam. Of course, they had their fair share of arguments and significant disagreements, but Gon and Killua always find a way to team up again.

While Gon and Killua certainly make one of shonen anime's strongest duos, a few other impressive anime pairings outshine the two Hunters. Whether it's because they're stronger fighters or simply because their personalities mesh with each other's better, these anime duos managed to ultimately outperform Gon and Killua.

10 You Can't Have Ash Without Pikachu (Pokemon)

Ash and Pikachu Pokemon

Ash and Pikachu have become one of anime's most iconic duos. These two have gone through everything together. They've fought in several challenging battles together, so there's never a dull moment in any of their adventures.

Even though Pikachu was apprehensive of his new trainer after meeting him, these two formed an unwavering bond that surpasses many others in the medium. Pikachu and Ash have a certain type of friendship that's just difficult to replicate. It's hard to imagine Ash's journey to becoming a Pokemon master without Pikachu by his side the entire time.

9 Asta & Yuno Share The Same Goal Of Becoming Magic Knights (Black Clover)

Yuno looking unimpressed, while Asta appears serious and determined.

Like Gon and Killua, Black Clover's Asta and Yuno share a common goal. These two orphans both sought to become magic knights. However, their abilities are vastly different. While it could be argued that Nen is inherently stronger than both Asta and Yuno's abilities combined, how these two proved their compatibility as a team is truly impressive.

Yuno was lucky enough to receive the four-leaf clover grimoire, and Asta ended up with its five-leaf counterpart. Even though their abilities are so distinctly different, they complement each other well. Yuno became a capable magic knight, while Asta showed his skills through his expert swordsmanship.

8 Kuroko Is The Shadow To Kagami's Light (Kuroko's Basketball)

Kuroko and Kagami from Kuroko's Basketball.

Some of anime's best duos come from sports anime. While there are plenty of solid teams in that genre that prove the importance of teamwork, no two characters quite outshine Taiga Kagami and Tetsuya Kuroko.

At first, Kagami didn't see anything of interest in Kuroko as a player. After all, Kuroko is short, frail, lacks stamina, and has virtually no presence. However, Kuroko shocked Kagami by proving his lack of presence is his greatest strength. Ultimately, Kuroko's passing power became the shadow that allowed Kagami's light to shine even brighter and make him one of Japan's best basketball players. The world of basketball is vastly different from the situations Gon and Killua face in Hunter X Hunter, but bonds like Kuroko and Kagami are hard to come by these days.

7 Natsu & Happy Never Leave Each Other's Sides (Fairy Tail)

Fairy Tail Natsu And Happy against a blue sky

In Fairy Tail, a Dragon Slayer's most important companionship is the one they have with their cat. Natsu Dragneel and his cat, Happy, are prime examples of such a duo. Natsu was even present when Happy hatched out of his egg. Since then, these two have been inseparable. Natsu and Happy never leave each other's sides — especially not during some of the series' most pivotal battles.

They always look out for each other, like when Happy forced Natsu to concede from a battle where he was clearly overpowered. Though Happy and Natsu certainly engage in petty bickering, they've never had any significant fights that caused a rift in their relationship.

6 Kurapika & Leorio May Bicker Constantly, But They Make A Strong Team (Hunter X Hunter)

Hunter x Hunter's Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio

The other half of Hunter X Hunter's main cast, Kurapika and Leorio are certainly a strong duo. If Gon and Killua weren't the main characters, then Kurapika and Leorio would certainly outshine them in terms of strength and ability alone.

Aside from that, these two have a unique chemistry. Even though they constantly get into trivial arguments and bicker about insignificant matters, it all seems to be in good fun. At the end of the day, Kurapika and Leorio make an undeniably strong team- not only as Nen users but also as comrades.

5 Gintoki & Katsura Are Longtime Friends (Gintama)

Gintoki and Katsura from Gintama.

Gintoki and Katsura from Gintama have been friends for a long time. Once, they were two rebels seeking to protect Edo's status as a sovereign nation against the invasion of the Amantos. These two have been through the wringer together.

They've stuck together through thick and thin, proving themselves are true confidants to each other. Gintoki and Katsura's shared experiences have given them a camaraderie unlike any other- with quite the fair share of running gags to go with it, making this duo even more lovable.

4 Joseph & Caesar Started Off On The Wrong Foot But Became A Strong Duo (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)

Joseph and Caesar from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

When Joseph and Caesar first met in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency, they fought like cats and dogs. Joseph's cockiness and refusal to take anything seriously got under Caesar's skin, who already had a grudge against the entire Joestar lineage. However, these two cast aside their differences for Hamon training and became a strong duo so they could defeat the Pillar Men.

Their Hamon training was slightly similar to when Gon and Killua learned how to use Nen. However, since Joseph and Caesar were only together for a tragically short amount of time, the audience came to appreciate and reminisce on their friendship.

3 Bakugo & Midoriya's Rivalry Brings Out Their True Strengths (My Hero Academia)

Izuku midoriya and bakugo feature image

Sometimes, the best duos are created from a rivalry. This is the case for My Hero Academia's Katsuki Bakugo and Izuku Midoriya. In the beginning, these two didn't have any semblance of a healthy connection. Bakugo was bullying Midoriya, who internalized the insults slung his way. However, Midoriya eventually gained confidence and reclaimed the derogatory nickname "Deku" from Bakugo.

After that, these two became healthy rivals as they both attended U.A. High to hone their quirks. Ultimately, these two bring out each other's best qualities, forcing each other to grow. Primarily, one forces the other to adjust their perspective on heroism. Bakugo pushes Midoriya to become physically stronger, but the latter reminds the former that heroism shouldn't just be an explosive show of raw power.

Yuji's answer was music to Todo's ears. After discovering that he and Yuji share the same type of women and a similar philosophy on fighting, Todo was ecstatic. He declared Yuji his best friend. However, he still wanted to spar with Yuji to force him to become stronger. After he taught Yuji how to perform a Black Flash, these two shared one of the best fights in the series against Hanami.

1 Tanjiro & Nezuko Beat All The Odds & Changed Minds About Human-Demon Connections (Demon Slayer)

No anime duo quite compares to the love between siblings Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado. After Nezuko was turned into a demon, Tanjiro was hellbent on finding a cure for her. He endured two years of brutal training to enter the Demon Slayer Corps to achieve this goal.

In the world of Demon Slayer, it was previously unthinkable for humans and demons to have any positive relations. However, Nezuko has fought against demons several times to protect humanity. Tanjiro and Nezuko have truly changed people's preconceived notions about demon-human connections. Additionally, these two fight together and make a pretty amazing team while doing so.
