Before the 2019 series aired, those unfamiliar with the manga or earlier anime adaptations might have presumed from the preview and trailers that the name of the protagonist of Dororo would be Dororo. However, the ronin's name proved to be Hyakkimaru while Dororo was the little child who stuck to his side for the entire series.

Dororo has four versions – the original manga from 1967, its anime adaptation in 1969, the 2018 manga, and the 2019 anime version that most fans know as the one and only version of Dororo. As one would expect, the anime missed out on a lot of crucial details that were mentioned in the original manga as well as bonus chapters published by the mangaka. Here’s a look at 10 such facts.

10 Anime V/s Manga

The 2019 series made it clear what kind of a person Hyakkimaru is. He’s quiet, observant, keeps to himself, has no understanding of society and social cues, and is also not able to communicate well since he is unable to speak.

Fans will be surprised to know this personality was quite the opposite in the original manga. In it, Hyakkimaru was a lot more confident and thus wasn’t afraid to explore things. He was also able to communicate well with people and had also made peace with how he was born (with several missing body parts)

9 He Made An Appearance In Young Black Jack

Young Black Jack is a shonen manga that was serialized with Akita Shoten's Young Champion. It was illustrated by Yugo Okuma and written by Yoshiaki Tabata. The shounen manga’s plot revolves around young Kuroo Hazama, a brilliant doctor who is desperate to see the approval and validation of those around him

In this manga, Hyakkimaru appeared as a doctor who’s lost both his arms and legs, named Hyakki Maruo.

8 The Secrets Of His Prosthetic Body

As a child, Hyakkimaru is born without his eyes, limbs, and many of his senses. The doctor who took care of him gave him prosthetic body parts, which were eventually weaponized by Hyakkimaru, who used them as a means of killing demons and enemies alike.

Hyakkimaru's legs are filled with corrosive chemicals and his arms have swords inside them; however, the manga also has an additional feature. In that version, Hyakkimaru also has a detachable nose that can be used as a small bomb.

7 Demons In The Anime & Manga

In the most recent anime series, there are shown to be 12 demons who are responsible for Hyakkimaru’s fate. Ultimately, all of them are killed by him within a span of a few years.

The 1967 manga mentions a total of 48 demons, but only some of them are covered. Hyakkimaru takes 50 years to defeat them all in the original story, which is not quite the case in the 2019 anime.

6 The Possibility Of Him Turning A Full Demon

Hyakkimaru’s Ghoul flaming horse, Midoro, helps the protagonist possess powers that make him stronger than before. These make him unstoppable, and this is seen on the battlefield as well when he fights Daigo's troops.

Dororo claims in the manga that the flame inside Hyakkimaru is demonic, which is growing stronger and stronger. It is implied that if it weren’t for Dororo, Hyakkimaru would have eventually turned into a full demon.

5 The Manga Shows Him Having Telepathic Powers

This is one of the many aspects that is not animated in the anime, for whatever reasons. In the original manga, after saving Dororo, Hyakkimaru tells her about his childhood.

Hyakkimaru was raised by a kind doctor who always wondered how he was able to sense everything, including where things are kept in his house. It is then that he communicated telepathically with the doctor.

4 He Felt Sad For His Brother’s Death

Throughout the anime series, Hyakkimaru is shown to have little to no emotions, especially when it comes to other people. But with the passage of time and the inclusion of certain people in his life (especially Dororo), he learned to experience normal human emotions.

This is why despite the fact Hyakkimaru and his younger brother Tahomaru are on opposing sides of a battle, the former shows sadness after the latter dies when his castle collapses.

3 His Age, Height, & Weight

The anime never mentions certain details about Hyakkimaru, like his age, height, or weight. However, studio MAPPA confirmed that he was 16 at the time the series took place.

This came as a surprise to fans, most of whom assumed him to be at least 18. Hyakkimaru's height is 160 cm while his weight when he was using prosthetics was 34 kg.

2 His Various Names

Hyakkimaru

Throughout the anime series, Hyakkimaru is addressed by different names, nicknames, and honorifics by several people. His father calls him the “half-demon child,” while his brother addresses him simply as “brother.”

Dororo calls Hyakkimaru “elder brother” while Asura bestows a more formal title for him – Daigo’s heir. Some of these honorifics appear often in anime and manga, but they help define the types of relationships Hyakkimaru has with other people.

1 He Looks Startlingly Similar To His Mother

At the beginning of the anime, the young boy bears a startling resemblance to his mother. Hyakkimaru has her eyes, black hair, and good looks, suggesting that he took more after his mother than his father.

However, by the end of the story, Hyakkimaru grows his hair even longer than his mother originally had and becomes his own person. He blossoms into an extremely unique-looking and iconic character.
