Some anime characters are just trapped in a glass case of emotion all day, every day. These characters aren't just in touch with their emotions — their emotions dictate every moment of their existence. Frequent crying isn't what makes a character a crybaby. Instead, a character is a crybaby when they constantly complain, crumble under pressure, and can't deal with even the most minor inconveniences.

Crybaby anime characters become the show's comic relief, but often, they're just annoying. Their constant whining can derail an entire plot, and the cowardly behavior that comes with it can cause issues for the other characters.

7 Usopp Is The Weakest Straw Hat Pirate

One Piece Usopp Uses Impact Dial

Usopp is undoubtedly the comic relief of One Piece. He can't think under pressure if his life depended on it, and he often lies through his teeth to avoid stressful situations. Usopp cries frequently and loses his composure within a milliseconds' notice.

Usopp isn't the most reliable guy around, and it seems like his whole existence revolves around his whiny behavior. Despite his aspirations of becoming a valuable team member, Usopp doesn't have what it takes to truly become a strong member of the Straw Hats just because of his personality alone.

He can't handle even the most minor inconvenience and often breaks down when something goes wrong. When something really scares Mineta, he'll even start crying blood while he's screaming. Albeit, he does seem to have at least some level of self-awareness as to just how incompetent he is.

5 Crying Is One Of Usagi's Main Personality Traits

Usagi crying in Sailor Moon 90s anime

Usagi from Sailor Moon is self-aware of her crybaby tendencies. In fact, she even introduced herself as such in the first few seconds of the anime. Aside from being a crybaby, she also introduced herself as a major klutz. Both traits were proven to be true very soon afterward in the show.

Throughout Sailor Moon, Usagi's tears often become comic relief. When Usagi cries, it's not just a stream of tears or even a waterfall; her tears shoot out in a dramatic, geyser-like flow. Fortunately for Usagi, these tears proved useful at least a few times. When she transformed into Sailor Moon, she released supersonic waves because of her crying that gravely injured a few villains.

4 Thunder McQueen Cries Constantly

Thunder McQueen Threatens To Electrocute Himself In JoJos Bizarre Adventure

Thunder McQueen was a minor character in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean. He's a suicidal inmate at Green Dolphin Street Prison.

After Ermes confronts him after he stole her money, Thunder breaks down crying in a way that would have embarrassed anybody else. The only thing Ermes did was ask if he was okay, and this was enough to set Thunder off once more. He became ecstatic about the idea of a woman loving him, but it quickly ended when he started crying again because he realized it would never happen. It seems like Thunder is self-aware about how pathetic he is.

2 Zenitsu Is Fully Aware That He's A Crybaby

Zenitsu freaks out from Demon Slayer

Unless he's in a deep slumber, Demon Slayer's Zenitsu Agatsuma wears his emotions on full display. When he's awake, he runs away from fighting demons and prioritizes his own survival above all else. Zenitsu is very aware of his own cowardly tendencies. He recognizes that he always cries and snivels in the face of danger instead of tackling it head-on.

Zenitsu's crybaby tendencies have certainly given fans of the show several instances of comic relief. He's like a cat on a hot tin roof most of the time because of his anxiety, and it seems like his tears are always bubbling underneath the surface. Regardless of whatever criticism the fanbase may have for Zenitsu's ridiculous behavior, one has to at least respect his self-awareness. Zenitsu knows he's an emotional disaster, but at least he admits it.

1 Takemichi Hanagaki Isn't Called "The Crybaby Hero" For Nothing

Takemichi in Tokyo Revengers.

Takemichi Hanagaki from Tokyo Revengers certainly deserves his title of the "Crybaby Hero." Though Takemichi gets tons of flak in online communities for crying far too often and disrupting the flow of the series, his temperament is one of his defining characteristics. Takemichi's behavior is dictated by his emotions.

Unlike other characters, his crying isn't exclusive to the series' most pivotal moments. Rather, Takemichi cries whenever he feels like it. He's overwhelmed by his emotions often, and the traumatic events he endures throughout the story certainly don't help either.
