Fans love to speculate when it comes to potential pairings in anime, but they're not always happy with which ones end up being canon. Fans often feel like there are better choices than what the author chooses, or that decent ships are weighed down by a lack of proper development.

In the worst of cases, fans are against ships due to unethical age differences, or because one partner mistreats the other. Whether it's something as serious as abuse or light-hearted as two characters just not being a perfect match, there are plenty of reasons why fans don't support particular anime pairings.

10 Enji And Rei Todoroki's Marriage Quickly Turns Sour

My Hero Academia

Rei Todoroki smiling and Endeavor looking serious, My Hero Academia

Rei agrees to marry Enji in My Hero Academia for the sake of her family, knowing it was a Quirk Marriage from the start. Their marriage is relatively happy at first, but things don't remain peaceful for long. Enji places birthing and training a successor above a healthy family dynamic.

Enji both physically and verbally mistreats Rei, and isn't above physically harming his own children if they try to speak up about it. Though Enji has taken steps as My Hero Academia continues to make amends, many fans can't forgive his past actions.

9 Sasuke Makes Multiple Attempts On Sakura's Life

Naruto

Sasuke attempts to kill Sakura in Naruto.

Sasuke's treatment of Sakura in Naruto is unforgivable to many, even more so because he essentially gets rewarded with Sakura's love at the end. Sasuke doesn't show much romantic interest in Sakura from the start, but even after he defects from the Leaf Village, Sakura's feelings for him don't waver.

At the end, it's revealed that Sasuke actually has shared her feelings from early on, and the two marry. Sakura and Sasuke even go on to have a daughter, Sarada, but it's hard to root for them given their rocky past.

8 Ikuto And Amu's Age Difference Makes Their Implied Relationship Uncomfortable

Shugo Chara!

Ikuto hugging Amu in bed, Shugo Chara!

Ikuto and Amu don't officially get together in Shugo Chara!'s anime, but they are a canon couple in the manga. That being said, even the few scenes in the anime that hint at Amu and Ikuto's relationship don't sit right with viewers.

Throughout Shugo Chara!, Amu is an eleven-year-old girl, whereas Ikuto is seventeen. Small age differences are common in anime relationships, but Shugo Chara! takes things a step too far, and Amu and Ikuto's blossoming romance is uncomfortable to watch.

7 Ichigo Ends Up With Orihime Despite His Bond With Rukia

Bleach

The main issue that fans have with Ichigo and Orihime's endgame relationship in Bleach is how well the series instead sets him up with Rukia. Neither Orihime or her relationship with Ichigo are well-developed, before she's shoved front-and-center in an uncompelling way.

Even in an arc that revolves around Orihime, the most compelling scene is given to Ichigo and Rukia. Many fans would be more open to his canon relationship with Orihime if it was given more development beforehand.

6 Mako Doesn't Work Well With Either Asami Or Korra

The Legend Of Korra

Mako with Korra and Asami, The Legend of Korra

The Legend Of Korra places more of a focus on romance than its predecessor, but this isn't a net positive. Rather than take the extra time to build compelling relationships, The Legend Of Korra fumbles both attempts at love for Mako.

Regardless of whether it's his relationship with Korra or with Asami, fans don't support Mako's treatment of either female lead. Thankfully, neither of these relationships make it to the end of the series, with the much-preferred Korra and Asami being the endgame The Legend Of Korra pairing instead.

5 Satou Develops Feelings For And Kidnaps A Child

Happy Sugar Life

Shio hugs Satou, Happy Sugar Life

Happy Sugar Life's content isn't nearly as sweet as the title suggests. Satou, Happy Sugar Life's female lead, develops feelings for a child whom she kidnaps, named Shio. Shio was mistreated by her actual parents, and thus clings onto Satou, leading to one of the most problematic anime relationships in recent memory.

Happy Sugar Life revolves around Satou doing anything she must to keep Shio with her, all the while justifying their twisted relationship. While Happy Sugar Life's main pairing is interesting to watch in a twisted way, it's not one that fans support.

4 Tatsumi And Mine's Development Leaves Something To Be Desired

Akame Ga Kill

Tatsume and Mine have a meeting in Akame Ga Kill!

Tatsumi and Mine's relationship gets more satisfying development in Akame Ga Kill's manga, but their anime bond leaves something to be desired. Fans enjoy Tatsumi and Mine separately as characters, but their romantic feelings toward each other aren't properly developed.

Sadly, fans of Akame Ga Kill don't think any other main relationship would have worked better, leaving Tatsumi and Mine's unsatisfying romance as the only viable option. They're a pairing that feels forced together for the sake of having a main romance, rather than a compelling duo who naturally fall for one another.

3 Ash And Serena's Bond Eliminates Any Future Or Past Pairings

Pokémon

Serena smiles at Ash in Pokémon.

Pokémon doesn't dive much into canon relationships, but Ash and Serena are the closest thing. Serena is confirmed to have romantic feelings for Ash, and she makes this clear upon her departure scene. Serena promises to become someone who will catch Ash's eye, before leaning in to give him an off-screen cheek kiss.

While this doesn't confirm their relationship, as Ash's feelings aren't fully known, it's the closest thing to romance presented in Pokémon thus far. Serena's a sweet character, but longtime fans feel that this limits Ash's other relationships negatively. Pokemon doesn't tend to bring companions back once their arc is over, meaning they likely won't get more development.

Vampire Knight

Yuki laying with Kaname, Vampire Knight

Older anime especially, often try to pass off inappropriate relationships as normal, as is the case with Yuki and Kaname in Vampire Knight. Kaname acts as Yuki's stand-in older brother figure, but the two harbor romantic feelings for each other despite this, even after the truth is revealed to Yuki.

Even though Kaname is only acting as her brother, he states in-canon that he would have preferred to be her actual brother. Vampire Knight treats the two like genuine siblings, making the romance between them incredibly hard to stomach.

Misa is truly in love with Light, who manipulates these feelings in order to use Misa however he pleases. Even fans who generally don't care for Misa's character still believe that she deserves much better than to be taken advantage of by Light.
