Characters in the world of anime come in a staggering variety, with some of them being fairly similar to real people and others, not so much. Shonen heroes tend to be loud, energetic and brave, and slice-of-life characters tend to get caught up in all kinds of high school drama and hijinks. Some of these characters would be easier to get along with than others.

What about an anime roommate? An ideal roommate is someone who's responsible, easy to get along with, clean and somewhat flexible. While two people don't have to be best friends to be roommates, there are still some standards, and many anime characters would make lousy roommates in a dorm or apartment for one reason another. It's time to take their name off the lease for good.

10 Keigo Asano Gets Really Carried Away (Bleach)

Keigo Asano from Bleach looking serious.

Keigo Asano is one of many Bleach characters found in Karakura Town, and he is one of Ichigo's classmates at school. Keigo may not be a bully or violent delinquent, but he is still a troublemaker who is difficult to like at times, especially since he gets excited and starts shouting over even the tiniest things.

For example, Keigo fancies himself a ladies' man and pounces on attractive girls, which is definitely an eyebrow-raiser. Also, Keigo doesn't like school, and he takes pride in getting bad grades. He'd set a lousy example for a roommate in college.

9 Machi Kuragi Has Unresolved Issues (Fruits Basket)

Machi Kuragi from Fruits Basket.

Machi Kuragi is a supporting character in Fruits Basket, and she proves that it's not just the Sohmas who have serious personal baggage to work through. Machi has zero self-esteem, and she is miserable and feels empty. She'd make for a depressing and boring roommate.

All this isn't really Machi's fault, but she would still be unpleasant to share a dorm with. Worse yet, she pathologically hates tidiness and perfection, and she sometimes goes on a rampage and makes messes of things, including breaking items. No roommate would put up with that.

8 Taiga Aisaka Is Messy & Short-Tempered (Toradora!)

toradora taiga aisaka

The petite Taiga Aisaka of Toradora! is much tougher than she looks, and she is known as the "palm-top tiger" who can thrash anyone who looks at her funny. She'd make an awkward roommate thanks to her short temper and her somewhat juvenile personality, and she has more problems on top of that.

Taiga is strangely apathetic while alone at home, having a messy and cluttered apartment and no cooking skills at all. She can barely take care of herself, but the kind Ryuji came along to patch things up. Other roommates might not be so generous, though.

7 Inosuke Is Almost A Wild Animal (Demon Slayer)

inosuke in demon slayer

Inosuke Hashibira was raised by animals, and even early-1900s technology is foreign to him, such as lightbulbs and steam trains, let alone 21st-century apartments and gadgets. This works out well enough for him in the Demon Slayer world, but if he somehow ended up in the 21st century, he'd have trouble finding lodgings and accommodating roommates, to say the least.

Inosuke is competitive and violent, and even if that's not an issue, he is unfamiliar with modern tech, money and laws. He would wonder why anyone should pay just to make the water run, and he'd be baffled by vacuum cleaners and fridges. He'd probably jump out of his skin the first time he heard the doorbell, too.

6 Kisaki Tetta Is A Magnet For Trouble (Tokyo Revengers)

Unlike Inosuke, Kisaki knows how the 21st century works, but he would still make for a troublesome roommate, and not just because of his youth. Kisaki is a violent punk who makes his own rules, and he fancies himself a tough guy who deserves to rule all of Tokyo's streets.

A punk like Kisaki would exploit a meek roommate or even intimidate them, demanding that they not turn him in to the police. He would probably fail to pay rent, then return home covered in bruises and scrapes and refuse to explain how he got them. Like most of the cast of Tokyo Revengers, he's a really troubled kid.

5 Rika Hoshizaki Would Be A Real Pain (Girlfriend, Girlfriend)

Screenshot of Rika's thumbnail.

Rika Hoshizaki, AKA Milika, is a vlogger who always finds time to post new videos of herself. That's not a bad thing in itself, but if she shared an apartment with someone, she would demand that her roommate stay out of the way and keep quiet while she's filming, which is often.

On top of that, Rika is rather vain and boastful and she keeps trying to make everything about herself. She can be bratty and immature at times, and she even has stalker tendencies. Any roommate would get tired of all this and kick her out.

4 Prince Ling Yao Eats Too Much & Uses People (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

ling smiling nervously fullmetal alchemist

Prince Ling Yao from Fullmetal Alchemist often annoys Edward Elric with his habit of popping up out of nowhere and eating far too much at restaurants, then forcing the bill on the other party. If he became someone's roommate, he'd clean out the fridge and pantry in a hurry, then refuse to pay for any of his meals.

If that weren't bad enough, Ling is very greedy, just like the homunculus Greed, and he would run off to find the Philosopher's Stone and steal it. If he got caught, his roommate would have to deal with the cops next and bail Ling out of trouble. If they can even be bothered to.

3 Nino Nakano Would Really Grate On Her Roommate (The Quintessential Quintuplets)

nino nakano quints

Nino Nakano is a good cook and can make friends, but she wouldn't warm up to a roommate too easily. She is used to being with her four sisters, the other of the Quintessential Quintuplets, and she would probably get separation anxiety if she tried to move out on her own. Even if she didn't, there are other issues.

Nino isn't a bad person, but she is stubborn and rebellious, and has a prickly tsundere exterior. She'll be kinder to people whom she likes, but the average roommate probably won't get to see her dere side, and instead, they would be treated to Nino's bratty and vain attitude and minor tantrums. What a hassle.

2 Kohei Imamura Is A Shy Otaku Who Drinks Heavily (Grand Blue Dreaming)

kohei imamura grand blue

Kohei Imamura of Grand Blue Dreaming is in college and joined the Peek-A-Boo diving club, and he parties it up every chance he gets. As a roommate, Kohei would be a real hassle, since he'll come back home wildly drunk in the middle of the night, or crawl his way back the next morning with a killer hangover.

Kohei is also a dedicated, even obsessive otaku, and he would flaunt that fact all over the apartment or dorm. Despite his flamboyant interests, Kohei is also rather introverted, and has trouble connecting to new people whom he meets. That won't make a good impression on a new roommate.

1 Valac Clara Is A Maelstrom Of Noise & Chaos (Welcome To Demon School, Iruma-Kun!)

clara with items iruma

Demons come in all types and varieties, just like humans, and Iruma Suzuki's most outgoing classmate, Valac Clara, is totally different from the dignified and aloof Asmodeus Alice. Clara is a loud, free-spirited girl who spends all day eating, playing and rolling around, destroying everything in her way.

Clara means well, but she comes off far too strongly, and no one wanted to be her friend until Iruma came along. Clara would quickly infuriate any roommate of hers with her loud, silly antics, well into the night. No one can get any peace and quiet with this demon girl around.
