The MBTI® system was designed to assign a specific personality type to a specific person based on their quirks, interests, and preferences. The person has to choose extroversion [E] or introversion [I], sensing [S] or intuition [N], thinking [T] or feeling [F], and judging [J] or perceiving [P]. The four-letter output dictates their personality type — for instance, if they got ISFP, that means they picked introversion, sensing, feeling, and perceiving.

ISFPs are open-minded and love new experiences, but they can become disillusioned if they try to think too far ahead. Anime is filled with great ISFP characters — here are a few of the very best.

Updated on October 25th, 2021 by Bailey Jo Josie: We have decided to add five more characters to the original list for more examples of ISFP anime characters, also representing five additional franchises that the original did not.

15 Sasuke Uchiha - Naruto Shippuden

Sasuke Uchiha, who has been both a protagonist and an antagonist in the anime series Naruto Shippuden, is one of the most popular ISFP characters around. However, while him being an introvert is all but confirmed by the anime, some fans choose to label him as an INTJ instead.

There are a few reasons Sasuke is more likely an ISFP: despite being closed-in, he's a very emotive person; he doesn't really think ahead— if anything, he looks back; and he prefers to go it alone rather than be a leader.

14 Tatsumi - Akame Ga Kill!

The main protagonist of the anime series Akame Ga Kill!, Tatsumi is definitely the kind of guy who thinks about the here and now, and what he can do with the resources he has. Like anyone, he has his hopes and dreams, but he doesn't always feel open to sharing them with others, and though he has friends, they're a very close-knit group — basically family.

While it's occasionally argued that he's an extrovert, he doesn't really seem like he's displayed any real extroverted tendencies.

13 Ryoga Hibiki - Ranma ½

Ryouga from Ranma 1/2 ISFP

Ryoga is a fine example of an ISFP as his deep shyness (especially when it comes to Akane Tendo) and the character traits that make him practical and in-the-moment toa comedic fault.

Ryoga is notorious for having absolutely no sense of direction and, while this is played up to the point of absurdity, his way of dealing with it as a cartoonish ISFP would, which is to just try and get somewhere instead of thinking of how long it always takes him to get to his destinations.

12 Simon - Gurren Lagann

Simon and other characters from Gurren Lagann.

Simon from the series Gurren Lagann is an ISFP in a vein similar to Tatsumi. Both are young and are just starting to learn how the world works, and both have a small group of friends but feel nervous when meeting or talking to new people.

Over the course of the series (especially in the second half), Simon's traits seem to change a bit, but not enough to significantly alter his Myers-Briggs type.

11 Ryuko Matoi - Kill La Kill

Ryuko Matoi - Kill la Kill

Ryuko Matoi, the protagonist of the short-lived anime series Kill La Kill!, is an independent, competitive— but not particularly social— fighter who sees that her #1 priority is to get stuff done.

She can get hot-headed at times, and she prefers to go on gut feelings rather than waste valuable time thinking.

10 Inuyasha - Inuyasha

Inuyasha looks proud with sword resting on his shoulder

Despite Inuyasha’s rough exterior and blunt attitude, which were developed in order to protect himself as a half-demon trying to survive in a world that rejects him, he’s still quite caring of others, like a true ISFP.

Inuyasha is also a character that doesn’t put too much strategy into his battles other demons but instead focuses on what happens in the moment, allowing for his skills and abilities to lead him to victory. Like an ISFP, Inuyasha is very private about his true feelings, even with Kagome.

9 Haruka Nanase - Free!

Haruka Nanase, one of the protagonists of the swimming-based anime series, Free!, is one of the best examples of an ISFP in modern media. He can be unnecessarily grim at times, and he doesn't like to think about the future or plan long-term goals.

However, despite not expressing them perhaps as much as he should, he has feelings, and he does enjoy some of life's experiences— especially the water-related ones.

8 Eren Yeager - Attack On Titan

Eren Yeager, the main protagonist of the anime series Attack on Titan, has the natural stoicism that comes with being an ISFP, but his connections to the type don't stop there— like most ISFPs, he prefers to act on his feelings without needing the approval of others, rather than taking his feelings to them.

He is able to work as part of a team, but when doing so, he doesn't really try to "go beyond"— his goal is to earn his place and fulfill his role.

7 Nana Osaki – Nana

Nana Osaki from Nana

While Nana– at least the one with short black hair, piercings, and a cigarette– is introverted and may be intimidating, she’s a deeply caring and considerate person, proven by how she connects almost instantly with the other Nana, or Hachiko, as she comes to be called.

Nana is the singer in a punk rock band which coincides with an ISFP’s creativity and her decision to strike out on her own in Tokyo is in line with ISFP’s sense of adventure and need to experience things.

6 Genya Shinazugawa - Demon Slayer

Genya in Kimetsu no Yaiba

Genya, a character in the anime series Demon Slayer, is an embodiment of the well-known example of a hot-headed ISFP who's unwilling to be reasoned with.

That being said, yes he goes his own way and lives for himself, but when it comes down to it, he has enough morals to recognize the need for others.

5 Yuji Itadori – Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuji after eating Sukuna's finger

Yuji is an extremely athletic teenager who would much prefer spending time in his school’s occult club than breaking track and field records so that he has time to visit with his ill grandfather.

After Yuji’s grandfather’s death, the old man said that he didn’t want Yuji to end up alone like him, which suggests that Yuji is more introverted, making him an ISFP. As such, Yuji is always quick to jump into action and he leads by his heart and not his head.

4 Ojiro Mashirao - My Hero Academia

Ojiro from the anime series My Hero Academia is a more peaceful ISFP— he still embodies all of the core traits that an ISFP would be expected to, but beyond that he doesn't really have any of the negatives. He's calm and introverted; keeping his feelings inside is a way of making sure others feel listened to, not a way of trying to ignore them or push them away.

He's very much aware of the world of around him, and even when it seems like he's not paying attention, he still is.

3 Thorfinn Karlsefni - Vinland Saga

thorfinn vinland saga

The protagonist of the anime series Vinland Saga, young Thorfinn Karlsefni, is an ISFP solely because he doesn't have any reason not to be. He doesn't have a reason not to express his feelings, or to rush into situations; they're just things he does, because he's never done them any other way.

Actually, this is the kind of ISFP who's most likely out of all of them to change types later, as since he hasn't been introduced to an opposing type, he doesn't know whether he's secretly harboring feelings that coincide with that type or not.

2 Zuko – Avatar: The Last Airbender

Zuko preparing to fight

A sulky prince who is driven by an intense need to restore his honor and always jumping into action headfirst? Sounds an awful lot like an ISFP. Zuko is driven by his need to capture the Avatar and then works to do what’s right.

It takes time for Zuko to come to terms with his good side but he’s always been shown to consider the needs of others (like the outburst that led to the Agni Kai against his father), which are traits of an ISFP.

1 Asahi Azumane - Haikyuu!

Asahi frowning in Haikyuu!

Asahi Azumane, one of the characters in the popular volleyball-themed anime series Haikyuu!, is a powerful attacker who can defeat many opponents and often leads his team to victory.

Despite this, he doesn't seem to like taking credit for his accomplishments, because unlike many others, he doesn't play volleyball for the social aspect, but rather for the spur-of-the-moment thrills the game produces.
