Tsundere and Yandere run anime as the most popular Dere types, but what about the Kamidere? An unpopular archetype of anime characters, the Kamidere is essentially anime characters with a god complex. These characters can be male or female and crossover with other Dere types. The Kamidere also shares similar characteristics with the Hime/Ouji Dere archetypes.

All the anime characters on this list have characteristics of being a Kamidere. The word Kami is the Japanese word for God. Kamidere act highly as if they are far superior than the rest of humanity. They are arrogant and conceited, but sometimes it’s a ruse. Kamidere may act superior, but to their love interest, they let down this exterior.

10 Teruhashi Kokomi – The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.

Kokomi Teruhasi is a self-proclaimed perfect girl. She acts as if she is the greatest person in The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. In the series both men and women find Kokomi attractive which leaves them to gaze upon her presence. She is conceited in a way where she brags about having good looks, but states that it’s just the simple truth. Because of her beauty, Kokomi can manipulate anyone into doing things she wants. Everyone except Saiki Kusuo. When Saiki treats her as a normal person despite her appearance, she becomes interested in him and eventually falls for him.

9 Naoi Ayato – Angel Beats!

Naoi Ayato is the vice president of the purgatory world of Angel Beats! Born into the shadow of his older brother Naoi was always outshined in life. When his talented older brother died, Naoi took the role replacing his brother. Having to live for other people Naoi didn’t think much of his life. When joining the Battlefront, he belittles the rest of the group never referring to them by their names but as “you” and “that”. This changes when he meets Yuzuru Otonashi. He views Yuzuru very highly for always listening to him and thinks of him as his real older brother.

8 Sena Kashiwazaki – Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends

Sena Kashiwazaki is the school’s headteacher’s daughter in Haganai. She doesn’t like things that she deems ordinary. Sena is attractive and smart which makes her unrelatable to the rest of the students at school. On top of her arrogant personality, most of the female students dislike her. As for the male students, Sena treats them as servants meant to assist her in whatever means necessary.

All the male students except for Kodaka, who she secretly has a crush on. Sena puts on a front while at school and secretly wants to be friends. She is overjoyed when receiving the nickname Niku, the Japanese word for meat, even though it's used as an insult. This is because it’s the first nickname she has ever received.

7 Haruhi Suzumiya – The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya

The world is quite boring to Haruhi Suzumiya, but instead of changing the way she thinks, it’s because society is up to her standards. Haruhi sees herself well above the rest giving characters in her series a hard time because things don’t go the way she wants them to. Haruhi is unapproachable to others. As she states when introduced to her, “I’m not interested in ordinary people. But, if any of you are aliens, time-travelers, or espers, please come see me”. Haruhi takes interest in Kyon who helps her start the SOS Brigade. She even acts Tsundere towards him.

6 Mio Isurugi – MM!

Mio Isurugi is the club leader in MM! She has a major superiority complex considering herself as a deity. Like Haruhi Suzumiya in the previous entry, Mio also acts Tsundere to her love interest. Sado Taro is Mio’s underclassmen and is victimized by Taro. The two go hand in hand with each other as Mio has sadistic tendencies and Sado is a masochist. Contrary to other Kamidere on this list, Mio isn’t very smart at school and relies on her appearance.

5 Satsuki Kiryuuin – Kill La Kill

Satsuki Kiryuuin stands for fear, subjugation, and contradiction in her world of Kill La Kill. Resembling traits of a dictator, Satsuki is the student council president of Honnouji Academy. Satsuki views her role as a position of authority standing above the other students.

*Spoiler Warning* The school is really a fortress built by Satsuki where she rules over everyone. Her Kamidere archetype shines most when she evaluates the students to pick out the ones she believes are worth her value.

4 Lelouch Lamperouge – Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion

Lelouch Lamperouge is a Kamidere that can also be described as an Oujidere. He is incredibly smart and because of his aptitude, Lelouch believes he is better than the rest. Lelouch only cares about what’s best for him. Operating as the leader of The Resistance, Lelouch doesn’t care for the lives of others. Using his Geass, Lelouch has the power to make others obey him without question. Sending The Resistance into battle, it doesn’t matter how many die as long as they take down the Britannia Empire.

3 Father – Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Known prior, as The Dwarf in the Flask, Father developed into a Kamidere when he disregarded the value of humans. He sees them as a tools assisting him in gaining power. Father believes he is the chosen one to set out to become the perfect being. As the perfect being he can stand on top of the rest of the humans.

Father doesn’t believe he is doing anything wrong. He states that he just wants perfection and to have the world’s knowledge. He questions why he should be punished for the things he is doing.

2 Dio Brando – JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

Dio Brando is the main villain in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 1. Dio doesn’t care much for what is good in the world and believes the world is his oyster. Brainwashed by the delusions of power, Dio works to reset the universe. His stand is called The World which takes powers from the Joestar family. Dio’s actions can be linked to when he was a child. His farther was abusive and Dio was taken in by George Joestar after his death. There he developed a hatred for Jonahthan Joestar, George’s son.

1 Light Yagami – Death Note

Rounding out the list is the most popular and greatest Kamidere, Light Yagami. Light tops out the list because for a period Light did become a god. It wasn’t easy but thanks to the Death Note Light was able to cleanse the world of anyone he didn’t see fit. Light believes his actions fall under his moral compass and that he is doing the world a favor. He shapes the world to his liking believing that he is the only one in the world that can do it. Even when outed as Kira, Light still tries to justify that his actions were right.
