10 How A Realist Hero Rebuilt The Kingdom — Kazuya Souma Brought Modern Social Reform To The Elfrieden Kingdom

Kazuya Souma Checks His Phone In How A Realist Hero Rebuilt The Kingdom

Unlike almost every other isekai protagonist out there, Kazuya didn't save his respective fantasy kingdom with amazing combat prowess, but with diplomacy. Previously, Kazuya was a university student who took an interest in governance and social studies. Now, he's the king of Elfrieden Kingdom and he has all the power he needs to enact major social changes.

It should be noted that Kazuya was literally given the throne when the king was so impressed by his suggestions for improving the kingdom's defenses. Using his knowledge of Earth's politics and history, Kazuya singlehandedly modernized Elfrieden's medieval society by introducing things like an entertainment industry and economic reforms.

9 Death Note — Light Yagami Ruled The World As Kira

Light Yagami remembers everything in Death Note.

Death Note isn't just one of the few anime to star a villain, but one of the rarer ones where said villain won. After outsmarting and killing L, Light wasted no time and enforced his warped views of justice on the world. While still staying in the shadows, Light ruled the world as Kira for five years.

Light did this with the (in)famous Death Note, a notebook that kills whoever's name is written on it. The world was cowed into submission by the fear of Kira's instantaneous "justice." A sure sign of how lasting Kira's impact was is that in the manga, cults dedicated to his merciless justice rose after his death.

8 Code Geass R2 — Zero United The World & Ushered In An Era Of Peace

Zero Kills Emperor Lelouch In Code Geass R2

After bringing down the Britannian monarchy, Lelouch Lamperouge took his father's place as ruler. As the Holy Britannian Empire's 99th emperor, Lelouch liberated the colonies not to free them, but to prepare them for his coming world domination. Thing is, this was all a ruse and Lelouch was only playing the role of a villain.

With his final masterplan Zero Requiem, Lelouch set himself up as the ultimate evil that the legendary rebel leader Zero (read: Suzaku Kururugi) would publicly assassinate. Lelouch's gambit succeeded, with the world's people rallying to Zero and all the nations uniting as one global community founded on peace and freedom.

7 The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya — Haruhi Unknowingly Made The World Revolve Around Her

Haruhi Drags Kyon Close In The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya

One of Haruhi's biggest faults is that she acts like she's the center of the universe. Much to Kyon and viewers' surprise, this is actually true in a literal sense. Haruhi has dangerous godlike abilities that allow her to rewrite reality however she sees fit, but she's completely oblivious to them and never willingly used them.

Without realizing it, Haruhi fulfilled her wish of living an extraordinary life whenever her powers overtly or subtly drew otherworldly occurrences and beings (like robots and time travelers) to the SOS Brigade. In short, she effectively turned her life into a quirky anime. Haruhi never realized this, and just enjoyed the shenanigans as they happened.

6 Blue Gender — Yuji Kaido Convinced Gaia To End The Blue's War & Let Humanity Live Again

Yuji defends himself in Blue Gender.

The world that Yuji woke up to after spending decades in cryogenic stasis was different from the one he left. Now, the Earth was a wasteland dominated by murderous giant bugs called the Blue and humanity has mostly evacuated to the safety of the space station Second Earth. Little did Yuji know that he'd be the one to restore the balance.

It's revealed that the Earth is sentient, and its spirit Gaia unleashed the Blue to cull humanity for ravaging the planet. Yuji convinced Gaia to give humanity a second chance on Earth, thus ending the Blue's menace. That said, the price was apparently Gaia turning the people of Second Earth berserk so that they would wipe themselves out.

5 Paprika — Dr. Seijiro Inui Lost Control Of The DC Mini & Let Dreams Merge With Reality

Dr. Inui Shows His True Self In Paprika

The DC Mini's original purpose was to let a psychiatrist enter a patient's dreams and help them out from there. But for the wheelchair-bound Dr. Inui, it wouldn't just restore his ability to walk but turn him into the God of Dreams. This is exactly what happened in Paprika's final act, where Dr. Inui let the DC Mini run amok and took advantage of the chaos.

When dreams collided with the waking world, anarchy reigned as reality and sanity were in danger of imploding. Dr. Inui reemerged as a godlike being empowered by dreams, and he was intent on trapping both realms in his never-ending nightmare. Dr. Inui was finally stopped after Paprika transformed into a giant baby and ate him.

4 SSSS.Gridman — Gridman Tore Down Akane Shinjo's Escapist Prison

The Real Akane In SSSS.Gridman

The big twist of SSSS.Gridman is that its primary setting, the city of Tsutsujidai, is a simulation in the Computer World. The city is a cross between Akane's idealized life and Alexis Kerib's, the anime's true selfish villain, kaiju incubator. The only reason why Alexis' enabled Akane's self-destructive isolation was so that he could turn her into a kaiju later.

Gridman put a stop to this not only by defeating Alexis Kerib, but by using the Fixer Beam to restore Akane to her human form and free her from the Computer World. With her idyllic but hollow prison demolished, Akane returned to the real world (read: ours) while Gridman rebuilt Tsutsujidai to its pre-kaiju war state.

3 Serial Experiments Lain — Lain Iwakura Deleted Herself From Reality To Give Everyone A Second Chance

Lain In The Wired In Serial Experiments Lain

Even if Masami Eiri's delusions of godhood were stopped, the damage that The Wired's mere existence inflicted on Lain's friends and family was too much. Worse, Lain wasn't sure if she was ready for the responsibility of bridging the physical and digital worlds. Additionally, doing so would effectively turn her into a goddess.

Lain's solution was to reset the world and wipe herself out of everyone's memories. With even their most tangential of connections to The Wired severed, Alice, Lain's family, and even Masami got to live normal lives. The anime's epilogue, set years later, closed with Lain promising to reunite with Alice (now a married woman) in the future.

2 Puella Magi Madoka Magica — Homura Akemi Ended The Law Of Cycles Herself

Sideview Of Homura In Her New World In Puella Magi Madoka Magica

After suffering through endless time loops that always ended in tragedy, Homura had enough and upended the cosmic balance for Madoka's sake. To finally free herself, Madoka, and all Magical Girls from their dark fates, Homura embraced her curses instead of letting it be cleansed, effectively turning her into a dark goddess.

In this new world, the Incubators now bore the universe's suffering the same way they enslaved Magical Girls. Meanwhile, Homura and everyone else got to live normal lives where magic doesn't exist. Problem is, this new world is a fragile lie that Madoka, who was stripped of her godhood, could break in the upcoming movie Walpurgis: Rising.

1 Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon A Time — Shinji Ikari Remade A World Without Evas

Shinji Waits In The Anti Universe In Evangelion Thrice Upon A Time

The last Rebuild of Evangelion movie wasn't just the tetralogy's finale, but the swan song for all of Evangelion. With the Lance Of Gaius and the reins of Human Instrumentality, Shinji rewrote the world in such a way that the Evangelions never existed at all. As a result, he and everyone in the cast were given a second chance at life.

Here, Shinji and his fellow pilots weren't just freed from the death and suffering that the Evas caused, but they all grew up into well-adjusted adults. Not only was this Evangelion's unsubtle way of showing that the characters have finally matured and moved on, but most importantly, so has its creator Hideaki Anno.
